Looks like you're having a lot of the same ideas as me! I'm looking to build either a 4k or surround gaming build, but also be able to edit/render videos from it too. I've also pondered the though, although I feel it would end up more expensive, and have 2 PCs, one for gaming the other for recording/editing.

Not sure if its okay to post the link to it here but here's the thread I started for mine! http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/303227-new-machine-planning-and-discussion/

I'll gladly help figure out yours too!

For starters, I'd switch from an Ivy 4930k to a haswell 5820k. the 5820k is the same as the 5930k but with less PCI lanes but since you're only doing two way SLI thats just added cost with no real benefit. And if you do that, go with an x99 mobo. More up-to-date and better than x79.

If you're gonna spend that much on a soundcard, just get an external amp and DAC

@SimpleG Thanks for the suggestions, but honestly i want to go with air cooling this time, just to be on the safe side, since this is going to be a really expensive build, plus this air cooler from what i've heard on other forums is a lot quieter and is close to performance when compared to the h110. Next i prefer Asus and Nvidia for motherboards, monitors and graphics cards and those will always be my choice brands! The ssd you listed is not what i'm used to and i don't think i'd be able to fit it in the case because the cpu air cooler will cover up one of the slots and with the two graphics cards and soundcard, i don't think there will be any room left. plus i'm pretty much set on the case i listed, i've browsed through a lot of cases and this is the one i chose due to it's small size and how silent the case is. Thanks anyways though, i do appreciate your help regardless!

Here is the updated build with what i like from everyone's recommendations. ^-^

The memory kit and cpu cooler will not play nice together. The cooler has a max memory module height of 35 mm according to its specs. Dominator Platinum modules are, I believe, over 50 mm tall.

On X79/X99, it is better to get memory kits with four modules. That guarantees quad channel memory operation. A 2x8GB kit is only capable of dual channel.

It would be better to get an X99 based motherboard and i7-5930K cpu. X99 has a number of additional features. Including support for M.2 ssd using up to 4 PCIe lanes.

The psu is much larger than needed. A good 850W unit would be enough.

well if this is your choice, I'd reccomend G1 Gaming and do you really  need a sound card and not an external amp?

@brob Yeah i realized that, that's why i updated the ram to Corsair Vengeance LPX, those will be short enough for the R1 Ultimate and i will do 4x4gb at 2133 instead, cause i also just realized the cpu only supports up to 2133mhz. Also your right i will go with the 5930k since the 5920k is the same price! k i will go with the Corsair hx850i.

@SimpleG I think Asus Strix 980's are a good choice, would 2 Gigabyte 980's G1 GAMING 4GB be better? And for sound options, i was thinking of these parts as a combination,

Your build is starting to look a lot like the one I just did. https://pcpartpicker.com/b/vG6XsY

The onboard sound card on the Asus x99 Pro is very good. Unless you are editing music and are an absolute audiophile I would recommend sticking with the onboard soundcard. At the very least test it out and see if you want to add the additional sound card.

I have really enjoyed this build. The only changes I have made is swapped out the motherboard for a x99 deluxe since I wanted the option to add a third 980 for when I go to a 4k monitor. If you know you will not add in the third card, then stick with the 5820k and the x99 pro.

@hitsu1 Well since price is really not important at the moment and this is just for fun, maybe i should go all out and go with the new 8 core cpu and add another graphics card as well. I am a bit of an audiophile and it was recommended to me that i get an amp and run it through the soundcard, especially with the headphones i want.

Updated the build again,

Love Tek Syndicate, must have missed this video, thanks for sharing it with me and don't worry you've convinced me to ditch the soundcard. I may also go with the gigabyte card, still debating about it, i just really like Asus and i heard the gigabyte g1 is a lot louder than the asus strix, i also was thinking of going with the asus matrix instead what do you think, http://www.amazon.com/Asus-MATRIX-GTX980-P-4GD5-ASUS-Graphics-Cards/dp/B00S5V6EG0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423085921&sr=8-2&keywords=asus+980

The Strix is much quieter than the G1.

Unless the plan is to push overclocking on the Matrix it probably is not worth the cost.

What if, like in my case, I wanted to go with a water block on a 980, which would be the best card to do that to?

I'm also planning a 4k build or maybe a surround setup, not sure on what I wanna go with yet but I have a year till I build it.

If you have a year, don't bother picking specific models today. In twelve months time the choices will be different.

Ideally I'd like to build it sooner, financially it'll be a few months.

Going with either 4k or surround but I need to be able to do heavy audio work and some video.

I did a bit of research, I'd change from SLI 980's to SLI 970's. The power difference from 970 to 980 is about 10%, and if you overclock you can achieve that. At least for now, the 980 isn't worth the 60% price difference over the 970. Besides, SLI 970's out perform a single 980, and since you want to get dual 980's, about $1000, dual 970's will run about $650.

Instead of an internal sound card

you could invest on a DAC/AMP from MayFlower Electronics to use with the headphones you will be using.

I agree with most people here, change that SLI 980 to SLI 970's if you can, will save you alot of the money, and a sound card isn't necessery for a gaming build.

Good luck with your build,

So someone on craigslist is buying my 770 for $375, so i can buy one 970 and a friend owes me $500 which i will use to buy the monitor.

I also wanted to ask about the 3.5gb vram thing with the 970, i play skyrim heavily modded, do you think i will run into any problems? I've also been thinking of maybe trying out Radeon as an alternative, but i've heard bad things especially with the drivers.

If you do go 4k, and you go with that PB278Q, make sure you get the 4k one. The regular 278Q is just 1440 so double and triple check your purchase before you do.

Otherwise looks good to me. I'm personally going to roll with x99 but if you wanna go with the z97 by all means! Can't beat that price.
