How does Youtube's "Automatic" Quality selection work?

So I recently switched to Firefox, as Chrome was literally freezing my PC 100% of the time I loaded a page.

I used the Magic Youtube addon or whatever, this automatically puts your video quality to whatever you set it to.

This extention is not for Firefox as far as i know, and Youtube itself ALWAYS sets my quality to 480p by default.

I have 100/100 internet and i use a ethernet cable, so I dont know why youtube sets it to 480p.

How do i change/fix this?

didn't know that there was an add on to do this, handy stuff. 

 

I think if you set it to "low" or something like that it gives you 480, if you say highest it only goes up to 720, never higher. Which is very annoying.

check the settings in youtube to see if it is set to never play hd videos. its in settings/ playback

It's set to highest quality.

What resolution is your screen at?

I have best quality setting, but whenever I open a video it plays at 720p and when I fullscreen it it's 1080p.

My monitor is 2650x1080 21:9, but i never use fullscreen unless I play the video on my second 1080p 16:9 screen...

Firefox does have a similar addon.  Just search for "youtube auto hd" in their addon repository and you'll find it.  And as far as how their system works, it checks to see if your connection can support 480p (and lower), and sets it to the highest..  It will not automatically set it to anything higher than 480.  However, if you manually change it to HD, and you finish a video without buffering, it will remember that for the whole session, as long as you traverse videos by clicking on the suggestions in the video frame after you finish the video.
