no gpu in device manager  <<< Right here, all you needed to do was restart your pc again.  Happened to me.

...oh wait.. you had just uninstalled the drivers.

Mine worked almost seamlessly.  First boot showed a 7950 instead of my r9 280, I just restarted and done, everything worked.

Had similar problems once, make sure your iGPU is disabled. That's what fixed it for me.

could you please explain how you think clearing a CMOS will fix an AMD driver issue?

You will get it.  It just needs a little... magic =o.

seems like everytime I install na AMD card I expend a little of my magic reserve

right from trying to install a 4870 the other month to an r9 290 a few months ago, to then trying to crossfire that r9 290 to then trying to now install an r9 280x

Its not that complicated...

1. Uninstall Afterburner and remove all remnants of it.

2. Safe mode, DDU uninstall AMD drivers and prepare for new card.

3. Swap card to new one. Boot (not safe mode)

4. Reinstall AMD drivers and Afterburner. Reboot if necessary.

ahh maybe afterburner is giving me a bad time...

Make sure you have the latest .NET Framework.

CCC requires the latest version for it to open / launch.

Why didn't you uninstall the drivers FIRST before taking out your 4870 / 4850??

You're going to run into trouble for when the PC detects a completely different, much newer, graphics card when the drivers installed is for a legacy/EOL product.

IMO:

  1. Uninstall 13.xx drivers
  2. Shut down the PC, and remove the HD 4870 / 4850
  3. Install new R9-280X
  4. Let windows do it's initial crap work
  5. Download and install 14.12 (or whatever you want)
  6. Reboot
  7. Install the latest .NET Framework through Windows Update (if you haven't got the latest one already)
  8. Reboot.
  9. ...Profit.

yeah CCC actually tells me there is nothing that it can configure. I will check for .net - I have c++ redist.

look... i really SHOULD have uninstalled the old drivers first.... but I didnt.

Given that the old driver is pre 7900 series it has no chance of being applied to the r9 280x
