Gateway BOOTMGR is MISSING!

Laprop is 7 Desktop is 8.1

Damn, I don't think 8.1 bootmgr is compatible with 7, but we'll try this anyway, put the laptop drive in your computer, get 7-zip, install it and whatnot, open it, navigate to C:\, bootmgr will appear as the first file below the folders, drag that to the laptop hard drive C:\, don't put it in any folders. Then put the drive back in the laptop and try booting.

bootmgr is actually in a hidden System Reserved partition, and and his 8.1 PC is probably using an UEFI motherboard, which doesn't have the bootmgr.

where do I get the software?

I'm using a UEFI board, I'm looking at bootmgr right meow.

I hope downloading 3.5GB and putting it onto a USB drive is fine, because that's what we're gonna do.

  1. Go to http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/page-2#post-124821
  2. Download ANY 64-bit ISO (assuming your laptop is 64-bit)
  3. Download the Windows 7 USB-DVD download tool from https://www.dropbox.com/s/psvvppawz6axqli/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe?dl=0
  4. Once the ISO has downloaded, use the tool to creata an installer USB. USB drive must be 4GB or larger.
  5. When complete, boot your laptop from the USB. During the bootup, try pressing keys such as F12, F8, F10 or F9 in order to bring up the boot device selection menu.
  6. Wait for the installer to load. Choose your language, region and keyboard layout
  7. In the next screen, click "Repair My computer" in the lower left corner
  8. The rest should be automatic

I tried to drag and drop but I need permission to copy.. Idk how to get that permission.

There should be a confirmation window, don't drag and drop, that's moving it, right-click the file and copy to, in the path, just do (laptop drive letter):\

At the point where you're going to download the whole ISO onto a USB and then use it to "attempt" to repair Windows using the built-in wizard (which, from my experience, has NEVER worked), might as well just wipe the drive and reinstall Windows from scratch in order to avoid any further issues that may occur from the power interruption during previous install, because it might not just be BOOTMGR file that is missing.

At the point where you're going to download the whole ISO onto a USB and then use it to "attempt" to repair Windows using the built-in wizard (which, from my experience, has NEVER worked), might as well just wipe the drive and reinstall Windows from scratch in order to avoid any further issues that may occur from the power interruption during previous install, because it might not just be BOOTMGR file that is missing.
