PC Overheating while Idle

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

Hot Constantly, From when I turn it on at about 1pm, to when I turn it off at 3am.

I have OpenHardwareMonitor run on Startup, and about 2 minutes after Desktop, the Temperatures get High (50C+)

The PC is brand new, every Component, except for one of the Memory Sticks, so there is virtually no dust.

Fans are set as you said, Intake Front, Rear Exhaust. PSU is top mounted, therfore the PSU fan is also acting as an exhaust.

20-50% of CPU usage is going to a task called "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)"

Try running your system with the panel off. If that doesn't fix the temps, then try remounting your cpu cooler.

Hi there,

This is my first time posting here, as i've never need assistance with technical issues before now.

My Specs are as follows:

Processor: AMD A8-7600 APU 10Core (4CPU+6GPU)

Motherboard: ASRock FM2A78M-HD+

Memory: 2x8GB Crucial DDR3 1600Mhz

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB

Case: Cooler Master Elite 342 w/ 400w PSU

GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Tri-X TOXIC

Fans: 2xCase + CPU.

The issue is that, even while Idle, the PC is getting 50C+ temperatures on all Hardware, and is even heating up the Case to the point I could keep a Coffee warm just by sitting it on top of the case.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Is your cpu/GPU running hot constantly (i.e. the instant you start up -- wheres the heat coming from)?

The issue is probably poor airflow through the case though.

The first thing to do is always make sure you have good airflow, and that you clean your PC of any dust. Then try to re-apply your thermal paste for your CPU. If you don't have any, even just re-seating your heatsink can help.

Just looking at this and remembering an anti AMD ad. AMD: primary purpose computer, Secondary purpose; space heater....

Jokes aside, how are the fans setup? intake at front, exhaust in rear?

I have an AMD fx 8350 in my gaming/workstation computer in my room.  If its really cold in my room I can crank the cpu to 5 GHz and run a looped benchmark.  Room temps will go up 10+ degrees.  Functions great as a space heater.  If its particularly cold I will bring in my server from the basement.  then its nice and toasty.

But to the OP, If you whole case is heating up then you have an airflow issue.  That chip should not be running hot enough to cause that kind of case temp increase if you have enough airflow.  There should be a rather significant difference between your cpu temps and your case temps.  If they are close and still low then you have great cooling.  If they are close and high then you have bad case airflow.

Check your task manager to see if your cpu is actually idling or if something is consuming resources in the background as well as checking your airflow.

The temps are everywhere, not just the CPU, in fact, the hottest temp is on the board at 70C.

Also a new issue has been brought up also, with the CPU Usage. for the past 10 minutes it has been at 100% and i'm not doing anything.

There are 9 things listed under the single task labeled "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)" and it is using 40-50% CPU.

The tasks are:

Windows Driver Foundation

Distributed Link Tracking Client

Superfetch

Program Compatibility Assistant Service

Network Connection Broker

HomeGroup Listener

Human Interface Device Service

Device Association Service

Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

Download and Run Malwarebytes and AVG. If that doesn't find, what I'm assuming is a virus/malware, something, then I would just format and reinstall windows (you could go through and just deal with whats causing the issue, but a fresh windows install is just easier).

But if your whole system is getting very hot (not just cpu/gpu), then I would also blame your case's airflow.

Judging by the MB temps hitting 70C too ; It IS bad airflow.

Well, it's still getting the same Temperatures, but not as quickly, marking Solved

See what programs open on startup and disable anything you don't need (I'd recommend looking each one up before disabling it to make sure you don't actually need it).

Go to start > System Config > Startup

Is your cpu overclocked btw -- the cpu could be running hot due to the stock cooler not being able to handle the cpu properly.

The CPU is not Overclocked, but the Motherboard has Built-in "Smart-OC" so sometimes it runs at higher than stock speeds

smart OC is designed to run at turboboost speeds when under load. it looks pretty, but it doesn't actually do anything. the advice to check for viruses is good. I'd usually recommend norton power eraser, but it requires a working knowledge of what should actually be present. If you're not sure it's not a program you should be using, as it will delete essential files if it thinks they're acting suspiciously.

Malware bytes has a very good virus removal tool, or if you're a bit more old school, just use mcafee.

Make sure the room is cool as well. Don't have a heater on the floor to cook your feet right next to it.

Here's the easiest fix.

- Unmount the CPU cooler and rub off the old thermal paste

- Get a new stick of thermal paste

- Use the line method

- remount the cpu hardware.

I'd probably do the same for the GPUs if they're out of warranty.

yeah, but even professionals screw up sometimes. I brand new system shouldn't be overheating at idle. Unless of course they've woefully underestimated the heat output, or something's gone wrong on install.
