Why both?

I'm new to the building your own PC but not computers in general anyways would I need both a non static mat and wrist band for the mat I kina doubt it because I will work on a wooden table

You don't need either, really.

Just the wrist strap should be fine. The boxes that the parts come in can be used as "esd mats"

I didn't use a mat, for the mobo I used its own box, and when I installed it to the case I had it laying on a wooden table as well. I only used the wrist band.

The theory is that if you ground yourself to the mat that your building on, you are grounded relative to the pc.

using a wrist strap connected to the mat AND another one to something else simultaneously is something I have never heard of....

 

but you can just YOLO and not use one at all, like I'm sure most of us do. I have also never heard of anyone frying a component via static unless they were actively trying to with a piezoelectric crystal.

The wrist wrap will do fine. I use it.

 

It is a nice cheap piece of equipment to help against accidents, so I say just go with that.

For a beginner builder definately use one of these, prefferably wrist strap attached to the metal piece on the pc case.

Alternative is discharging yourself by touching a piece of metal or the back of plugged in PSU every now and then.

The alternatives worked perfectly when i had to dissasamble my old pc.

I never used either, just grounded myself by touching my case and working on the mobo box and a wooden table.  You should be fine as long as you don't forget to ground yourself and don't work when you're tired.

Built several PCs now while standing on carpet with no strap and no mat. Just keep touching the case and you'll be fine.

Touch a metal object like your case every little while and you'll be fine.

ive been building computers for 20 years. never used one, never had a problem.

You don't need one at all, just touch the metal of your case every so often, and when you are doing any work inside the case

I wasn't trying when I killed my motherboard, and also not when I fried my X1300 (loooong time ago) I just have loads of static in the winter and it's the "you can see sparks fly when my hand is 2 inches from the door knob" kind of static.

When it's warm and I know I'm not charged and on socks, I'll replace a hard drive without grounding myself. However on cold days or when building, I strap myself and the PC to my mat and make sure we're both grounded before I touch any of the internals.
