Tampering with/Deleting System 32

So I know all the dangers of tampering with system 32 but I was wondering, because everyone keeps saying your pc will not boot... and my understanding of an os is that it is on the hdd...

so if someone loses system 32, can't they just format the drive and reinstall windows?

Should be able to. Re-installing boots from the disc, not from the harddrive. If it's Windows 7 or later (I think), the old files in the boot drive (User folders, etc) should still be available in the Windows.old folder.

I would look into why System32 is missing. It's not something you can just delete like that.

Looks like the HDD failed, or the SATA cable is broken.

Well, yeah.  If you somehow manage to delete system32 or otherwise destroy your Windows install, you can just format your HDD and reinstall.  It doesn't kill your hardware.

But...why do that when you can...not do that?

It is not missing, this is per say, a 'thought experiment'

You either reinstall windows or run the system restore to a date before you got drunk and decided to delete core system components :)
