Install MSI afterburner and report on wether the gpu is actually under full load or not and if not how high it goes. By the way, what power supply do you have? Maybe it can't supply enough power for the gpu to work at full tilt.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Hey, I just recently purchased an r9 290 reference model. The only problem I am having is that it is going a lot slower than I expected. Compared to my R9 270x it's going just slightly faster. Something else I noticed is that when playing skyrim (heavily modded) this GPU is going like 60 degrees celcius at 40% fan speed. Having read some reviews, it's supposed to be atleast 30 degrees higher. Is it for some reason not performing at full power? I have the newest drivers already.

Maybe your CPU is holding the card back. What cpu you have?

Also, maybe your PSU is crap. What do you have?

Go on AMD control panel, and adjust target temps. Maybe you set it to 60ºc by accident, or some other weird stuff is happening.

95 max temp, i5 4670 should be more than enough, my psu is 750 watt with the full 8 and 6 pin connected to my gpu. How do I try uber mode?

There should be a switch on the card. However looking more into it from what I can tell it changes the speed of the fan.

I really don't think I would need to RMA it so quickly, I just got it, and it seems a lot of other people also have problems like this with this card.

I won't be home for several hours so I can't test it right now, but could it be that I need to increase the power limit? Another problem might be thermal throttling, because I am pretty sure I saw it underclocking itself at some point while playing Skyrim. Is there anyway for me to disable the thermal throttling?

you are using a reference AMD GPU

that cooler is loud and do not cool the GPU well

the GPU is hitting the 95 degrees thermal limit and will throttle back to keep it cool

you either need to go for watercooling using the G10 and Kraken X41 mod to keep the temps in check

also you need to buy thermal tape and RAM sinks to cool the VRAM and VRMs

Except that it is at 60 degrees celsius like I said? It is not even going near 95 degrees, but that's my problem.

I'm starting to think I did something wrong with the 8 pin cable limited the power usage or something.

EDIT: Just played again, it's a little cooler in my room and this time it didn't go above 40 degrees at 20% fan speed. I think my card is working at it's minimum right now.

Something else I noticed is that core clock keeps fluctuating between 700 and 800, while I set it to 1000.

Some more news: I put my anti aliasing 8x and this time I had the exact same FPS numbers, but in MSI afterburner my temperature went up and it is working harder. So all I need to do is get it to work at full power without having to set all my settings to the highest. How would I do this?

The R9 290 doesn't throttle at 95°c, it's made to run at 95°c on full load.

But anything that can decrease the temps will benefit, so G10+AIO is the way to go

Okay guys, I'm starting to think I'm being limited by my 4670.

I ran a very GPU intensive game (minecraft with shaders, shaders are really GPU intensive) and I saw my GPU going at full power running at 80 degrees. I also noticed a 40 fps increase compared to my r9 270x I had before.

I turned shadows from ultra to high on skyrim (skyrim shadows are all cpu dependant) and in the places where I got 40 fps I get 60 now.

I thought the 4670 was more powerful though.

If it is a reference cooler, I would use positive case pressure in your case (more intake fans than exhaust), so that the blower on your gpu doesn't have to compete with your case fans.

I personnally run 2 intake fans at the front, and I don't see any temperature improvement from adding an exhaust fan at the back, so I just removed it.

a 4670 should be more than powerful enough for skyrim, unless of course you have skyrim modded to hell and back.
