AMP needed?

Amps do not improve sound quality. They do exactly what they say. They amplify the sound - in other words, they make things louder.

If your onboard can get it loud enough, then you don't need an amp... The amp only makes the output louder for those hard to drive (high impedance, low sensitivity) headphones...

 

I suggest getting a DAC&AMP combo like the Objective2 if you really want an amp...

Worst case, if you get a bad amp, it'll introduce noise into the signal or even change the signal altogether...
