1440p GPU Solution

Go to solution Solved by YellowDragon,

My advice would be 7970 CF as they dropped the price on them, you can get two 7970s for the price of one GTX 780 and still have some money for a few lunches on the side. The 7970 may be an older card, but it still has quite a bite and you will be able to max any game out there easily for the next year or two. Go for the 7970s and put the money you would have spent on a second GTX780 in the bank for your next graphics upgrade down the line, that way when the 7970s can no longer pull decent frames in games you can just pick up the next latest and greatest.

Also I agree the Titan is a massive waste, as you could pick up 3 7970s for the price of one, never will a single GPU beat a multi-card setup of the same generation as long as a game is coded right.

Really? It's the same price. Hey, don't buy a 4GB card, buy a 3GB card for the same price. Your reasoning completely astounds me lol. Hey, don't buy the car with more horsepower, you'll never use all of it. Instead pay the same amount for a car with less stuff. Sound like a plan? Yeah, didn't think so.

How can I get this through to you? It. Can't. Use. 4GB. I rather have a card with higher memory interface width like the 7970 than getting one with less like the 770. If we ever see games that use up 3GB the 7970 WILL be faster than the GTX 770 4GB.

But can it use more then 3GB of VRAM? So get the card with a higher memory interface with less VRAM? Still, makes absolutely zero sense.

I'm done, done done done. You are impossible.

It can't use 4GB. I'll leave it at that. Bye bye.

I never said it could. I said it can use more then 3GB of VRAM. I win?

He actually did make a good point. You two bickering pretty much destroyed the thread anyways.

People recommending GTX 770 4GB on a tech forum. Really? You know it can't make use of it because of it's 256-bit memory interface width, right?

I read a article about this last week (forgot the link).

While it is true it cant use the full 4GB it can use about 3.8GB so that's still a big difference from 2GB.

I want the source for that.

Here you go (srry, it's dutch):

http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1550832

With the gtx770 at 60fps it will be able to use 3739MB.

If you overclock you're memory so that your memory bandwith is bigger then 245.76GBps you'll be able to use the full 4GB.

So it appears that I'm right. Get a 4GB card!

LOL! And he was so certain it could only use 3GB. Let this be a lesson to everyone: Be sure of your facts before you go and post them on a forum.

Exactly right. People that are quick to point a finger that everyone is wrong but them will never learn anything in life. Some people give others advice based on their believes, while others give people advice based on the other persons need.

I remember when I first was getting ready to build a computer. Everyone told me that I only needed a 1.2GB card and everything higher was just a waste of money because I'd never use it. Guess what? I bought the card and quickly found out I was already maxing out the VRAM.

Moral of the story, if you don't know what you're talking about then don't advise others on what they should buy. To you it's just a quick message on a forum and then you go on with your life. However, that person you advised could have went out and wasted their money on something they never should have bought. That's why when I see topics like this I make it very clear that it's better to have too much VRAM then not enough. It's better to never use something then it is to buy something and already be limited. If it comes down to paying $30-$40 more for that extra memory then go for it. It sure is cheaper then shelling out for a brand new card a few months down the road.

So I'm looking for a GPU solution to make the most of my 1440p monitor for gaming. I was awed by the GTX 780, but it seems it hasn't quite got all the power to play every game at 1440p at reasonable fps. I looked at SLI and realized that would be major overkill. So, here are my options:

1. 1 x GTX 780 £550

2. 2 x GTX 780 £1100

3. 2 x GTX 770 2GB £660

4. 2 x HD 7970 Ghz Ed 3/6GB £600-£700

5. 2 x GTX 770 4GB £760 - £850

6. 1 x HD 7990 6GB £650

The lower I can keep my budget the better, but I'd be willing to stretch it if needed.

Just know the 7990 does not have 6GB of usable  VRAM it's 3GB on each GPU so it's 3GB usable my money is on a GTX titan with 6GB of Vram it's well worth the money.

Watch the video at 2:50.Is he totally wrong?I thought same thing only 3gbs ram..But according to him you get all 6gbs of ram on 7990..

Nope, you do only get 3GB of VRAM. Watch Linus's video of the card.

You're not serious, right? The Titan is the best way to waste your money! It's not even really meant for gaming. I could get 2 6GB 7970's and be better off.

It's not that he's wrong it's what the video card is advertised as haveing is 6GB jsu tliek the 690 says it has 4GB but it's not really 4GB's it's 2GB

Why not put that in as a option then? I am saying what I think is best for the money. at high red 1440+ you want more Vram and the Titan has 6GB's of Vram while yes their is a 6GB 7970 if you put two in crossfire you will get to much frame stuttering it's better going one GPU over two SLI or Crossfire.

And yes the titan is made FOR GAMING if not it wouldn't have popped into the market as a GAMING GEFORCE GPU.... If it's not for gaming the 780 isn't for gaming either, it shares the same GK-104 core (Not exact but similar none the less).

By the way, are Zotac cards any good? It's just that they do 4GB GTX 770's the cheapest. I'd rather pay £383 for one than get an EVGA Classified one for £430.
