1440p GPU Solution

Go to solution Solved by YellowDragon,

My advice would be 7970 CF as they dropped the price on them, you can get two 7970s for the price of one GTX 780 and still have some money for a few lunches on the side. The 7970 may be an older card, but it still has quite a bite and you will be able to max any game out there easily for the next year or two. Go for the 7970s and put the money you would have spent on a second GTX780 in the bank for your next graphics upgrade down the line, that way when the 7970s can no longer pull decent frames in games you can just pick up the next latest and greatest.

Also I agree the Titan is a massive waste, as you could pick up 3 7970s for the price of one, never will a single GPU beat a multi-card setup of the same generation as long as a game is coded right.

So I'm looking for a GPU solution to make the most of my 1440p monitor for gaming. I was awed by the GTX 780, but it seems it hasn't quite got all the power to play every game at 1440p at reasonable fps. I looked at SLI and realized that would be major overkill. So, here are my options:

1. 1 x GTX 780 £550

2. 2 x GTX 780 £1100

3. 2 x GTX 770 2GB £660

4. 2 x HD 7970 Ghz Ed 3/6GB £600-£700

5. 2 x GTX 770 4GB £760 - £850

6. 1 x HD 7990 6GB £650

The lower I can keep my budget the better, but I'd be willing to stretch it if needed.

1 titan would be my vote but, 2 770 4gb would get my vote. you will need the extra vram so that would help.

I would get one 780 now, and add one later (or get both together if finances allow). 3GB of VRAM isn't going to be limiting any time soon at 1440p, and the GK110 is just baller in terms of raw perfromance.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-5820K, Corsair H115i, Asus X99-Deluxe/USB 3.1, G.Skill Ripjaws4 32GB 2800MHz CL16, Zotac RTX 3070, Samsung 950 Pro 512GB in Angelbird Wings PX1, Samsung 850 EVO 1TB, 5*Seagate 12TB, Cooler Master V1200, Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, Windows 10 Pro. I would go with a 780 if you will be upgraing to SLI later (if you don't get it now).

If not, 2x4GB 770's.

Also, make this a poll thread. That'd be great.

Are you talking with every setting maxed out? Keep in mind, Anti-Aliasing is less needed beyond 1080P. The reason I ask, is I get more than playable framerates at 1440p with my GTX 660 Ti 3gb. But then again, I don't need every setting at max. I kinda want a second card, but I'd likely hit a memory bandwidth bottleneck, if I haven't already.

I would get 2 7950's and then get radeon pro to get rid of microstuttering and overclock the 7950's like crazy.

Okay, I'm making this a poll.

You're gonna need at least two cards no matter what it is to max the more demanding games. Buy the best 2 cards you can afford! Personally, if I had the money for two 780's I'd go that route! Otherwise, two 680's, 670's, or 7970's.

I just added a second 670 FTW+ and the performance increase was so needed. Running a single card at 1440 sucks! Unless you're running an older game that isn't very demanding.

DO NOT BUY A 2GB CARD!!! 3GB is minimum, 4GB would be preferred for further future proofing.

So the HD 7990 and GTX 690 are off the menu then?

7990 has 3GB so that would be fine but the 690 is only 2GB so that wouldn't be enough.

People recommending GTX 770 4GB on a tech forum. Really? You know it can't make use of it because of it's 256-bit memory interface width, right?

And?

So people should VRAM bottleneck themselves with a 2GB card just because you can't use the full 4GB on a 770? Makes total sense.

What are you talking about? It can't freaking use the 4GB.

Dude, I think what they're saying is it can still make use of significantly more than the 2GB gtx 770's. 256 -bit is still viable. Look how good the 660-ti was with it's 192-bit.

That exactly what I'm saying.

As for you, you need to take a chill pill. If you can't read what people say correctly then you shouldn't bother replying.

Who cares if it cant use the full 4GB of VRAM? Do you care when you don't use all your system RAM? So you would recommend somebody buying a 2GB card for 1440p for the simple fact you can't use the full 4GB on another card? So instead of having too much VRAM you think it's better to not have enough?

I'm sorry but that's absolutely horrible advice! I really hope people haven't taken your advice on this kind of thing in the past because you most likely had them buy something and they ended up with a bottleneck because of it.

I'm not in need of a "chill pill", thanks anyways.

7970 GHz Edition is a total nobrainer choice for people who want more than 2GB VRAM. No reason to get the GTX 770 4GB one.

Really? It's the same price. Hey, don't buy a 4GB card, buy a 3GB card for the same price. Your reasoning completely astounds me lol. Hey, don't buy the car with more horsepower, you'll never use all of it. Instead pay the same amount for a car with less stuff. Sound like a plan? Yeah, didn't think so.
