There is no problems reported by SMART and the hard drive seems to be functioning properly, other than this sound. The vibration noise is just from the fact that there are two 7200rpm drives in close proximity. Don't try to tell me my hard drive is failing for that reason, as thats just what happens.

Here is the sound I'm talking about.

The computer in question is my server thats in my signature. Its running Windows Server 2012 x64 Datacenter directly from DreamSpark.

It seems to do this constantly, and doesn't "calm down". Is it some windows feature doing something?

The Wannabe is no longer. Replaced by the Flotilla. If you replace every part of a computer is it still the same computer?

I dont think it reads if its in bios

My Hitachi drive makes all sorts of weird sounds but i have had it for about 4 years and its still going strong :)

It will spin up and then *BEEP* and sometimes when im accessing files on it, it will tick and click but its really jsut the head head pacing around lots. A defrag would probs solve your issue.

It's not fragmented. Just defraged it last night.

I would back up the harddrive. Any kind of odd noise coming from a harddrive is not a good one.

It generally mean that the harddrive is dying.

Heh, kind of hard to back up right now. I guess I'll get the essentials and wait till I get a new drive.

White label...?

I dunno about enterprise grade drives, but as for consumer-grade HDDs you'll see a lot of people point to WD Blue drives... I think WD Black may be your best bet though. Also IIRC the colour-coded drives have enterprise-grade cohorts, so just search what you will of that. Good luck

I wouldn't buy it. I imagine that they are refurbished harddrives.

And as a note of caution. Never buy harddrives online with shipping. Always try to pick them up locally whenever possible, as you have no idea how the harddrive could have been shipped.

I don't see any reason why it has to be White Label, if that's the brand name or whatever. Also the SATA II is going to make reusing that drive a bit harder with newer SATA interfaces... why not just get a WD Blue SATA III drive for a little more, or maybe a Seagate or other drive with SATA II that's from a more reputable manufacturer...?

Don't trust seagate, and heh, my server only has sata II and I don't see the point in hard drives having sata 3. Find me a wd 2tb for $85 shipped.

No stores around where i live unfortunately.

Interestingly enough, the hard drive is no longer making those sounds.
