800$ gaming pc

Hey guys,

so I am planning on building a pc, and this is what I have so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/chicken01/saved/4bM6Mp

I have done some research, and I know about pcs, but this is still going to be a first time build. I would like some feedback (what you would change, better parts, etc.)

I have a budget of around $800.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

I forgot to add, I am going to be buying a different mobo: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97A/

The ones on amazon and newegg are about $15 more expensive than the one at fry's electronics, and I wanted to add something to my list that hada similar pricing

Thanks again,

Ken

Go with DjDowski's build.  It is perfect.  Forget the 960, its one of the most pointless GPUs ever made in my opinion.

The 960 is crap, skip it. On the other hand, djdwosk97's build is unreal value. I can't believe he fit a 4690k, Z97 board, 600W PSU, SSD, and best of all, perhaps the best R9 290 left on the market. That R9 290 destroys any GTX 960 and is pretty damn close to a GTX 970 but at a way better price. I mean that build he posted is flawless. The only thing I'd add is three 120mm case fans: two for the front and one on top. Oh also, you might need a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket for your SSD. I'm not sure if your SSD comes with it or not.

it is but it's also above OP's budget because if you click his list you'll see tons and tons of 10 and 20$ MIR...it's a 900$ build realisticaly...

Thats also a pretty easy fix, hold off on the cooler until the rebate money comes in, and usually +/-$50 is doable. He could also hold off on the hdd for a couple weeks until he gets the extra $50/rebate money comes in.

yes indeed this can be a good way to go about it.

He could also let go the SSD and consider ordering one as a future upgrade and then just clone the drive to get windows over to the SSD...this takes 10 minutes to do.

True, but I don't like the idea of cloning an OS onto an ssd since then you're copying over all the random crap thats built up -- so I would always do a fresh install on the ssd. And given the choice of starting out with an ssd and then just adding an hdd vs. starting out with an hdd then cloning/reinstalling and re-adding the hdd, I'd rather just go with the former and start out with the ssd -- afterall, most people only play a handful of games at a time -- so 128gb (100~ after OS/drive's bullshit) should be doable for a couple weeks.

I do think mail-in rebates are highly worth it. By doing rebates on my power supply and case I saved a pretty significant amount of money. About $80, which I put towards getting the CPU I really wanted, Xeon E3-1231v3, instead of the more budget friendly i5-4590, and the GPU I really wanted, the GTX 970.

As a side note, back then in December the GTX 970 came with Far Cry 4, which I wanted badly, and the R9 290 was $30 higher in price than now. If I was building today when there is no game bundle I would take that PowerColor PCS+ R9 290 in a second as my first choice GPU. Not that I don't love my 970, but it's not worth $80 more than a top 290 like the PCS+ right now when it doesn't come with FC4 or ACU anymore.

He's not saying they're not worth it, just that people don't always have the extra money to put up in the first place. I.e. OP might only have $800 to spend, in which case he can't spend $870 even if he gets $70 back.

I agree with you guys that djdwosks build is very good.

But I think I'm want more cpu power than gpu power.

So maybe an i7 and a 660?

What do you guys think

For gamign you want more GPU power as in 99% of games a 4790k will perform exactly the same (at the same clock speeds anyway) as a 4690k. Not to mention the fact that DX12 will be released within a a couple years and that will shift more of the load off the cpu on the GPU.

I also feel like the 200r is better than the source 210

It's also twice as expensive and won't affect the performance whatsoever.

Direct X 12.

What (exactly) are you going to be doing with the pc?

As for the whole no MIR thing....Get everything except the SSD/HDD and the aftermarket cooler and you're under $800. Then once you get the rebate money back buy the SSD/HDD (whichever you didn't get originally) and also buy the cooler.
