Why didn't AMD stick with Phenom II?

The AMD Phenom II x4 940 was a great CPU back in 2009 and it was the original Phenom II chip. The Phenom II x4 980 and x6 1100T where also good in their day but that was along time past.

My little brother still uses an AMD Phenom II X6 1045T, it's a neat little chip, I even borrowed it from him to see how far I could OC it, I got to 3.8 from the stock 2.7, I probably could've gone further but I had a worse cooler back then.

wasnt a fan of the original phenoms liek the 840?/930? with the reduced l3 cache. and the 955 was better the 980 was too expensive, the 955 clocked the same (plenty of 4ghz ones) but was ALLOT cheaper.

(and yes you did I was in that thread) but they're not as bad as you think so long as you buy smart, if you bought a bulldozer fx4170 for £105 or whatever it was you're a muppet. ONLY buy the base models (the fx8300 or 8320 or 8320e) and dont buy the fx4's because the 6300 is like $5 more

in other words the only ones to buy are the fx6300 adn fx8320.

but my point is for anyone wanting an entry level pc that ISNT doing single threaded retro games (in which case celeron all the way) a fx6300 is still a great chip for gaming with fraps then transcoding the recorded 15gb FLV files down to 512mb avi's liek i do for the price, for a few quid more you can get teh fx8's which care 33% more powerful, sure at that point its wise to get a hyper 212 evo but thats legendary for being a cheap cooler that performs wlel so its not really a good arguement againt amd seeing as most people should probably get an aftermarket heatsink anyway because stock ones can be noisy depending on bios settings and the intel heatsinks are renowned for being a joke.

Phenom I was fail hard core. My 955 only was able to hit 3.5Ghz stable.

The first bulldozer lost like 20% of ICP. The idea was for servers and moar cores means moar performance. As for us gamers... we lost performance.

FSB?

13.5*260fsb (1333 in bios with 1600mhz ram)=3.51ghz.

13.5*300fsb (1066 bios with 1600mhz ram)=4.05ghz but thats allota volts but you can drop the multi or use a differnt ram and dividers

only half a million views.

my frienda athlon 640 (still k10) is stock 3ghz and stable at 3.75..

the architecture and voltage determine overclcokability with yeilds and thermal output playing a small part.

some people claim fsb overclocks are better for benchmarking infact, but this is likely due to also overclocking the hypertransport and or northbridge (memory controller) and not realising, if overclocked the same and the northbridge and hypertransport taken back down to stock speeds they should perform the same.

I did not get beat LOL. Lock AMD Phenom CPUs are locked for a reason. Just because you can work around it does not mean it's stable or intended to be done by AMD.

Didnt know that , that why i prefaced it with AFAIK.

 

On intel hashwell cpus (locked) the fsb oc is like 200 mhz max i think.
