Linux Noob

Go to solution Solved by mapegl,

What error did you get? And which options did you try in Boot-repair to get that error?

edit

oh wow, an edit. Didn't see that in the quote...

Glad you got it working.  You should share what you did and mark that post as solved, in case others need help. :)

Well the problem is that the error wasn't really anything I could work with. It was just telling me while trying to repair/reinstall GRUB that some packages were corrupt. Not which nor anything that could have been useful.

Though what I can say is that after installing Linux Mint and not having it start up at all and also not being able to integrate it into the boot manager with EasyBCD I reinstalled Linux Mint with custom partitions in the following way (which you, as I found out, have to do this way with most systems now):

I created only a

" / "     root partition

" /home "      home partition

" /swap "       swap partition

Initially I also created a boot partition (100MB) as well as a bios boot part (only 1MB) as suggested on a website. As I found out though, with an EFI system (you can find that in windows, if you have it or not) you don't need these and it will  only mess up GRUB. It should look for the the EFI partition created by Windows and install itself there, but what it does when you create those two small partitions is trying to install itself there and mess up.

Keep in mind that all of this ONLY APPLIES FOR A DUAL BOOT WINDOWS WITH LINUX MINT ON A SINGLE HDD/SSD.

Thanks everyone for the input and links you sent me.

So I would love to get into Linux and maybe setup my laptop with a Linux distro.

Any suggestions for getting into Linux? The trouble is I have a brother who basically knows everything about Linux but is incapable of explainig Linux to me. He leaves out so many things of which he just assumes I should know about....

What would be a good distribution to get into Linux without being completely frustrated?

How did you get into Linux? Did you get a book? Did you use a certain tutorial online?

I have only used Windows all my life so I have NO experience....sadly.

I'd say use something easy like Ubuntu to start with, then when you are comfortable with it, maybe move on to something more hands on if you wanted.

Really something like Ubuntu doesn't feel so different to Windows Or Mac. My Grandpa used it for a number of years without any problems when his PC wasn't running Windows so well.

The normal stuff is pretty easy to do, but if you want there is always the option of messing with terminal and using that to install and configure things.

How you get into linux. Trial and error sadly. Terminal will be your best friend. Yeah and askubuntu helps a lot too.

For the start you should get something based on ubuntu or ubuntu itself. So you don't have to worry that tutorials don't work.

Just some:

Ubuntu

Xubuntu

Linux Mint Cinnamon

ElementaryOs

ZorinOs

SteamOs if you going into linux gaming as its nothing else than a heavy modified ubuntu.

Guess I will be downloading both, Porteus and Ubuntu.

I am still open for suggestions and I would like something that also is very appealing to the eye, though that is definitely not my top priority. That is still functionality above all! ;-)

I started with Fedora, we were told to use it in one of my courses at BCIT. Honestly, so long as you get used to the Terminal, and pick a desktop environment you like, the distros aren't very different. I recommend picking a distro, installing it in a VM or a spare laptop for now, and just playing around! Try to set up all the things you use on Windows. Past that, just read some online tutorials,

Here is a decent place to start.

Just find some that are interesting, or seem useful.

Install Arch Linux. After you've done that, try an LFS (Linux from Scratch) install. You build the distro yourself up from the kernel source.

So I have installed Linux Mint. Now I have the problem that I probably have messed up something with the bootloader. I tried using EasyBCD to fix that, but it doesn't seem to work.

What do I have to do while installing to get a working bootloader?

Are you just running Linux Mint on the computer, or are you dual booting with windows?

Did you install Windows first, and then Mint?  If so, did you choose the option, "Install Linux Mint along side Windows" during installation?

Well the problem is, when I select that option, it wants to install Linux on my HDD. I want it on my SSD though. I have no selection options then though, so I cant change that.....

So Windows is on your HDD, and Linux is on your SDD, right?  When you go to boot go in your bios and change the boot order to your SSD.  If/when that works, your need to update GRUB.

Actually no! ;-)

I have 4 partitions on 2 drives.

120GB SSD with the Windows as well as Linux partition(s)

and a 750GB HDD with data on it. A smaller partition for games, the other one for movies, pictures etc.

Ok, I didn't read!  I've had Windows 7 and Mint on the same SSD before, and the bootloader just worked properly when I installed Mint.  I'm sure you've googled this problem.  There's a lot of documentation on how to fix it, I just usually start over and format the linux partition and then try the install again.  Good luck.

Deepin is an Ubuntu-based Chinese distro that, in my opinion, puts Ubuntu and Mint to shame. Highly recommended.
