AMD FX 8350 5.0 Ghz Overclock with Air Cooling.. Yeah I said Air Cooling!

Dive5885

The Issue

So I just to see what you guys think of my Air Cooler and if it can handle a 5.0 Ghz OC.

I'm aware a water cooler is needed but I just want to get some opinions.

The Cooler

Conclusion

So what do you guys think ?

The cooler has been wonderful cooling the 8350 @ 4.6 Ghz.

Is it possible or am I pushing my luck?

Thanks!

Wouldn't recommend going up to 5 ghz with an air cooler

you'll probably need better fans than the ones the come with the cooler.

Considering you have the CPU and the cooler, you could always find out yourself. Try it, if it exceeds 70-75C, cut it.

With this is mind, I am still very curious if you will hit it or not. I would say go for it :)

(make sure you watch those temps tho)

Just wanted to get your opinions.

I will have to give it a try sometime tomorrow or Monday.

I need to call MSI and ask them how to use there Desktop Click Bios ll.

The Bios is limited to 1.45v and you have to use the Desktop Click Bios ll to go past 1.45 but its sorta confusing.

I'd check out a better cooler, my Dark Rock Pro 3 can get my 8350 to 5GHz stable, but I never run it that high, I just don't like to, I always feel like there's a heater under my desk when I have it run 5 GHz, it's always running 5 GHz at LAN parties though

I'm not using the stock fan that came with it.

give it a shot, do about 5 min benchmarks for the clocks, don't hit more than 70c

if it crashes reset the bios and restart, and you've hit your max clock.

I need to figure out how to use the MSI Click Bios ll.

It gets confusing when you get to the OC section of the program and start looking at Voltage.

been there, done that...
it comes down to silicon lottery if you'll do it at 1.5v and its easy peasy..... or whether you need 1.6v and the temps go through the roof or if its just not possible with that chip at all regardless of voltage.
not a fan of the board but its an 8+2 so its more of a test of the board id say..
make sure you monitor temps with coretemp, voltage through cpu-z [watch for loadline calibration, learn it!] and try and stay below 70*c for the most part, reaching 80* wont kill your chip but its like staying out in the sun too long, it ages it faster the longer you stay there.
then again i dont know many people that really want to keep their e6600's proclaiming "im glad the never overclocked it".
