How hard are the ATH-M20X to drive?

Go to solution Solved by Peter Vaughan Truslow,

Can I just use my motherboards built in jack or do I need an amp?

you can use your motherboard's built in jack and it will be plenty loud. depending on your motherboard you might notice an improvement in sound quality if you have an sound card or DAC with an amp.

that being said, "hard to drive" usually means it takes a strong amp to get it to decently loud listening levels, and the M20x will get plenty loud on almost any source, therefore not hard to drive

They shouldn't need an amp, but the only way to know is to try and see. Right?

Motherboard's built in jack will be perfectly fine. Only thing that will struggle to get loud on the ATH series are some phones with weak headphone amps (looking at you, Nexus devices)

Really? my nexus 7 2013 could drive my HD800 and LCD-2 with ease, even my k712's are a breeze for it.

Or are you talking about the phone nexuses?

My Nexus 5 was really quiet compared to my S4, and my 2012 N7 was just unbearably quiet. Headphone output volume is pretty much the biggest difference that I notice when going from one device to another. All I ever do in school is listen to loud music to drown out the BS around me or annoy the person sitting next to me, my phone media volume is rarely found not cranked all the way up lol

Aww I see, they must of made improvements from the 2012 n7 to the 2013 model in the amp.
