Hello:

Soon I'm going to do a very budget build for a Arma 3 dedicated server I want for around 10 people max.  I was recommended the G3258, but I feel a bit suspect of using a dual core processor in a server, when I feel more cores will be critical.

Thoughts?

you could go with an FX 6000 series or an 8000 series if you can afford it, it will run better with those than with a core i5 or i3

I mean, you won't get that much lag, 10 people isn't that much. The AMD side would be better if you're willing to pay the power cost for a server.

Current Desktop Build | 2200G | RX 580 4GB | 8GB RAM | CTRL | Logitech G Pro Wireless

Laptop | 2018 MBA 256/16GB | MX Master

Thank you everyone, as much as I'd like to get a Haswell Xeon e3 or an i5 etc, this is a budget build.  I want to spend $300 maximum, so any of those decent CPUs are well out of question.

Is the FX6300 good enough do you think? That is very cheap as well.

Server+dual core...? No.

Atleast 4 core that have some range to them. Some server side applications dont take to HT the same as they do a real core. So an i5 could do the same or better then an i3 with HT.

Actually, quick question.  Are there any cheap ass Intel quad cores?  Eg. Low clocked i5, cheap Xeon etc?

Also, is there any advantage in buying a Supermicro Server Mobo as compared to say, the absolute cheapest board I can find?  They run around $170, so a bit pricy.

US prices, I know your in Canada.

Right now the 4430 & 4440 are running at 189. 4590S is 199. Then you look at their core speeds. Xeons are in the 199 range as well for 3.1Ghz range. I'd spend the extra grab a 4690K at 239. And if you need alittle more power you can always try to bump your core speed alittle bit without being stuck.

The only Xeon that looks good is a E3-1230V3. It is 4 core 8 thread. 3.3/3.7Ghz at 249.

No for your use case a good motherboard is all you need.

Cool cool, I'll up the budget a little bit then and get a cheaper i5 to really get some decent performance.   Going near to $300 for the CPU alone is too much, but those lower 44XX ones seem pretty good.

I don't need VPro, ECC, it's just an Arma server, so I'll find some decent, inexpensive 1150 mobo instead.

Yes, but with a 4690K you have the option to overclock even on the stock voltage and that will help if you get more traffic on the server. For a 30 dollar difference I would say it's well worth it.

After using my Core 2 Duo (4GHz OC) for my web server, which is no where near as loaded as a game server, and having the damn thing max out all the time with only a few people viewing my website, going with a dual core isn't a good idea. I'd recommend an Intel quad core/AMD hex-octa core CPU for a server as from my experience just adding a Xeon to mine made a massive difference.

It's a fair point, but the case I'm going to get will have little in the way of cooling, so OC won't be an option.  Secondly, it might be.. but honestly this will be private only, so I won't see it expand as it won't publicly run missions.

Get the Pentium and overclock it to 4.5ghz. Trial and error. If it doesn't work you are out $60. Sometimes testing things that have not been done before are worthwhile. Perhaps the OS running the server is more influential than the processor.
