Now that the specs for the new GTX 960 have pretty much been confirmed and are severely lacking in the performance department which GPU do I go for instead? I was considering going with dual 970's from the start unless the 960 turned out to have decent specs but the more I look at it a 970 seems extremely overkill and overpriced since I never intend to go beyond 1080p for gaming but I do intend to go with 3 1080p monitors so I know the 970's would be good for that but is there a 3-4gb VRAM gpu that is cheaper than the 970 that would work really well in a build that was figured for multi gpu configuration? I know the 970 would still be a solid choice but at the same time its actually a bit overpriced and I would like to stay at $250 or less per gpu since I will be having to spread my purchase of the two gpu's out over 6 months because of money so a single 980 is way out of the question and the overkill of 2-970's isn't really needed especially on a 1080p build, so which do I go with for a 5760x1080p setup that can be done on a 750 watt psu? I've been looking at dual R9 270x's or dual 280x's since all of the Nvidia 3-4gb VRAM cards are up there in price. BTW I do intend to play AAA games on 3 60Hz monitors and would like to keep them capped at 60 frames per second without having to lower the graphics settings to much. Would it be worth it to go with a different GPU or just stick with dual 970's still?

960 specs have not been confirmed yet and you don't even know how it will perform.

Have you actually looked into Crossfiring 290's?

So triple monitor 1080p, huh? That's 1.6x more pixels than 1440p. So... yeah. Dual 970s is the way to go.

But would a single 970 be able to perform at 60fps on pretty much all games at high settings or better? I just dont want to have to fork out $700+ for GPU's for just 1080p even if its 3 monitors.

I meant mostly confirmed since there are so many retail pictures out there of the 960 boxes with the specs shown in plain sight. I have thought about dual 290's would they be able to operate on a 750 watt psu with overclocks on both the cpu and gpu's?

So you're going to be gaming on all 3 monitors?

If you can afford the sli 970 would be a pretty good choice for now and will last a while.

Depending on how much they cost, the sli 970 would be better than crossfire 290(x).

Yes 2 gpu's work fine on a 750w psu.

If it is near 1440p resolution then I think 1 290x would be enough but idk.

The specs may have been kind of confirmed, but you still don't know how it will perform.

I'm not sure if CF 290's can be on a 750 Watt PSU.. I think it could?

By the way:

4K: 4.838.400 pixels

3x1080p: 6.220.800 pixels

3 1080p monitors is more pixels than 4K, that is why you need to throw so much GPU power at it.

I know we cant really tell how it will perform but honestly i've pretty much given up hope on it since its pretty much set that it will release with only 2gb of VRAM and only a 128 bit bus which is pretty much crap. I am planning to spread the purchase of 2 of the monitors and the second gpu out over 3-6 months after the initial build is finished. I just realized that I need a i7-4790k instead of the i5-4690k because of school since I will be creating video games, 3D rendering, and having to do video rendering for my degree in video game design and development. Thats why I am having a sudden need to lower the price of my build if I can without giving up on having 3 monitors to play on and my white and black theme.

Though I will admit I probably wont be playing on all 3 monitors for FPS games but all of my MMO and RTS I will be playing on all 3 since MMO's on triple monitors is amazing especially WOW and in WOW you cant afford heavy fps dips or spikes in the middle of a 25 man raid which is my big worry.
