I recently finished building my desktop and after installing windows 8 , i download my files into my hdd but my ssd still gets filled up because program files , program files x86 and users are in my ssd , and the files get downloaded to there to , i tried changing the files in users by moving the location to my hdd and i think it messed up my windows , now i cant open task manager , my control panel freezes all the time and i cant run as administrator , even if i used windows+x buttons together and command prompt to be an administrator , basically everything is fine , i can surf the net and play a couple games and all , but i'm unable to further install files and use many features due to my control panel not working properly , my task manager not opening and not being an administrator . i tried all the different ways to open task manager but none of them worked .

I would gladly appreciate some help !

You cannot move those folders easily

When you install a program you are asked where the program wants to be installed to, create a folder on your second drive (d: normally) and tell the programs to install there

follow this if you want to change the location of my documents, my pictures, downloads etc etc etc

I am confused...

lets say you are installing a new program, when you run the exe to install it, it says "would you like to install it to c:\program files etc etc, - you just change this to D:\program files and it will install the the hard drive

there is no reason it should be installed in BOTH places

there are a few programs you cannot change, but 99% can be changed

for steam etc you can do a similar thing and when you install the game tell it to install to a library you have created on the second drive

how to fix it? not sure without seeing it, might be worth just reinstalling windows if its a new pc

okay , the thing is i did what you said too , i did change it to install on my hdd , but PROGRAM FILES and USERS are on my c disk , which is my ssd , and it gets installed on users nevertheless , users -> * whatever username you're using * -> desktop/downloads -> the games and programs i downloaded can be seen here , which is on c disk , even if i changed it to install on the D disk instead .

I don't know how to change the whole users folder, but I can fix this for yah and meet you half way

first, transfer everything back where it was, except for your files in say pictures documents, downloads, ect\

Yah know the large stuff that doesn't matter to operation of any programs.

Just get the important windows stuff there.

Also, copy all of the program files back.

you may need to exclude some folders like steam, and that's fine.

to do this, you will likely need to do it from another machine. If you don't have one available, make a live linux USB and use that.

Now, for your user folders-these can be set to a different location

Right clock on the folders like Music, Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Downloads-go to properties

Navigate over to the location tab and clock move, like so

Now, it's best to get rid of most of your programs and reinstall them on a different drive, and leave the small stuff on your main drive

BUT

The other, messy option-

to relocate your program files-

Open Run with win+R

type regedit and hit enter

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion.

Open ProgramFilesDir and change the path to folder and drive letter you want

Repeat this for every key with a path Starting with a drive letter. (like CommonFilesDir ect)

Restart

This will not work for everything, and it is important you keep some of the MS stuff and as many small programs in the original directory as possible, but it should work for most everything with little issue, and on almost all future installs.

I only ran into issue with some software like adobe stuff myself.

This will automatically change the path in shortcuts and the whole deal

If this is overwhelming, just start a fresh install then.

i dont mind doing this although its overwhelming but i cant even open regedit and i have no idea why , basically i cant open most of the features that windows provides , so i think doing a fresh install might be better .

if i reinstall windows , will my ssd(120gb) and hdd ( 1tb ) be totally cleared from all the stuff i installed ? as in so that the available space in the drives are back to before i installed the programs (120gb and 1tb ) ? i dont want to do a fresh install with my hdd and ssd having less available space because i installed programs on it before .

The drive you choose to install windows on will be overwritten , and if not you can have the old files saved.

Just format both of the drives if you want to wipe everything.
