3 Gpu Help

Go to solution Solved by xAcid9,

Sell the 280x's and get a 290/290x or wait for 300 series in a couple of months. Not worth it to go for Tri-CFX.

Hi everyone i am not sure if i should get another 280x or not.. I was ask what i want for christmas and one of the items was a 4k Monitor i did not think i was going to get it and i did lol. It is the samsung u28d590d the only games I play are wow and bf3 and 4 i can maxout settings in bf3 with no problem but not bf4 i get around 40 fps min to 55 max on bf4 Medium settings at 4k . With x2 280x in crossfire so i am not sure if i should get another 280x or is it not worth it?i dont have to much to spend on a gpu right now that is the reason i am looking at the 280x i don't give a shit what brand the gpu is if i had the money i would get something nice from nvidia but right now i cant. And if I do can I run all 3 with a 850 corsair psu?

Asus Sabertooth 990fx

Fx 8350 cpu

corsair 1866 ram

Check and make sure that your mobo and CPU can support it. I dont think it'd be worth it unless you were on X79/X99, as any other platform would reduce you to using PCIE x4.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

You may be pushing the PSU's limit with three R9-280X (plug if your CPU and graphics cards are overclocked). You're probably going to need to look at a 950W-1050W unit to allow for some headroom with three of those bad boys.

This is me with my overclocked FX-8350, and two overclocked HD 7970's (aka R9-280X). This is measured from the wall, and I'm using a 80 PLUS Bronze Corsair TX850 (ver 1). 785W from the wall = 667W to the actual system.

Adding a third card should pump out a few more FPS, but it's not going to scale as well versus going from one 280X to two 280X. Additionally, a third card won't automatically allow you to bump the settings up to High / Ultra.

Even though your motherboard can run three cards as X16 + X8 + x8, the motherboard layout isn't quite set up for three-GPU configurations. Your last PCI-E X8 slot is the very last PCI-E X16 sized slot at the bottom. Unless you have a large case (i.e. 900D) that has 8 / 9 expansion slots at the rear, installing a third card won't work.

You a probably better off selling your two R9-280X and save up for:

  • Two higher performing cards (i.e. R9-290X's or GTX 980's)
  • Keep what you have for now, and see what the  new R-300 series has to deliver

Check and make sure that your mobo and CPU can support it. I dont think it'd be worth it unless you were on X79/X99, as any other platform would reduce you to using PCIE x4.

AM3+ motherboards can provide up to 42 PCI-E lanes (unlike Intel only giving 16 on the mainstream line-up). Most 990FX boards (like the Sabertooth OP has) will run dual cards with X16 + X16, or three cards with X16 + x8 + x8.

Sell the 280x's and get a 290/290x or wait for 300 series in a couple of months. Not worth it to go for Tri-CFX.

Dammit, you beat me to it.

Amd runs 40 lanes. So basically x8 pcie 2.0 which is pcie 3.0 x4

Just wanted to point that out :)
