GTX 970 or 980 for Blender?

I'd go with the 1060. Even if the card is slightly slower than the 970, the additional memory is well worth it.

 

If your scene is complex enough that it cannot fit in VRAM, the GPU cannot be used and you must either split the scene + composite together (potentially a lot of work unless planned for), or fall back to cpu rendering instead (great if you've a Xeon e5 kicking around).
