make sure to get the G1 rather than just the plain windforce -- it is a better binned chip, which will mean better overclocking potential

Really ? How did you come up with that ? everyone knows that the best 970&980 are Gigabyte G1 cuz they're more overclockable , that's because they're cherry picked and then comes Evga & Galax ,basicly triple cooler design cards !!!!

Good price/performance , the G1 are more expensive.

Also the cooler in the MSI cards is better.

The MSI variant is the cheapest 970 here and is still very VERY good , extremly silent cooling and great thermal performance.

The extra money for a G1 inst that worth it.

Yeah I was quite surprised that the MSI actually had the best cooling performance out of all the 970's I tested, although I do still hear that the G1 gaming overclocks better.

For cooling and quietness I have a evge 970 ftw and it is silent around 70% of the time as the fans do not spin till it gets to 65c and even past that you still cannot hear them that much at all with out my headphones on. (my pc sits on my desk about 10 inches away from my head.) Once my headphones are on and gaming I don't notice it. I can only hear my 3 other case fans and they are spinning at 850 rpm (corsair SP120 quiet edition) There is a dual bios switch on the pcb as well so if you are not comfortable with the fans not spinning you can adjust it at the flick of a switch. Or just adjust the fan curve in evga's software that the card come with. It also OCs very well if you want to do that also I don't see the need as it runs everything at above 60fps (BF4 I run at 120-140 fps on ultra settings) I have mine set on the second bios mode so the fans are spinning all the time and I ran a stress test for 4 hours and the card did not get above 65c. I love my 970 and it was about average pricing wise costing £294.99. I can not fault it

Could I get the regular gigabyte 970 and be fine? I'm honestly not looking to do much overclocking

Yes. You'll save yourself some bucks. The Windforce OC has the same cooling and noise performance as a G1. OCing is a bit hampered, but if you don't want to go for high OCs, you could just grab it and match the G1. Or OC to 1.4 ghz.

However, if it is going for the same price as the MSI, get that instead. It can offer as much performance and it's quieter, at the cost of higher temps. But only pick that if price is the same.

MSI Gaming 4g.

The 4gd5t and 4gd5t OC have thermal problems, and the other variants are just a wallet stab for no reason.

This daily question is getting on my nerves lol. You're asking which GTX 970 is "best".......you are just going to get opinions, as you don't specify what features you're looking for, just which is the "best" card....everyone here is going to have their own opinions, you're not going to find a "best" GTX970, you have to choose what features you want.

A better question would be as follows: What are the pros/cons to the most popular GTX970s and which do you prefer and why?

To answer this more logical question instead of which is "best" I would say EVGA. It has everything the popular Strix has, (0db feature and all) and has way better customer service than Asus, I can recommend from personal experience. If you are big into GPU overclocking you should look at the GIGABYTE G1 970. It's still good even if you aren't overclocking, but it's probably the best overclocking 970 on the market. I'm not sure why people love the Strix so much, it's supposed to be "more quiet" than other cards, but has this ever been proven, especially against other cards with the same 0db feature? It does look cool, I'll give it that, and it's supposed to be an all around good card. These 3 are the only way to go IMO...some people might recommend MSI, I'm not hating on MSI as they are a well known company but I had never owned an MSI GPU and they seem to be less popular than the others by a long shot especially this generation. I would look into EVGA, Asus, and Gigabyte, depending on your needs. If you aren't doing heavy overclocking or worried about a 1337 red color scheme, the EVGA IMO has the best mix of everything you need for a GPU, backed by great customer service. I'll be sticking with EVGA until they do me wrong, which I don't anticipate happening anytime soon.

Current PC build: [CPU: Intel i7 8700k] [GPU: GTX 1070 Asus ROG Strix] [Ram: Corsair LPX 32GB 3000MHz] [Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A] [SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB primary + Samsung 860 Evo 1TB secondary] [PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 750w 80plus] [Monitors: Dual Dell Ultrasharp U2718Qs, 4k IPS] [Case: Fractal Design R5]

What cheap/specific model do you recommend?
