RMA or keep?

Go to solution Solved by hypnodog,

Technically, I got approved for RMA. Though for some reason, the rep wanted me to submit it myself, I couldn't because of a bug. Hopefully I get a RMA# soon. I asked about getting a different model, but the rep just skimmed over it, hopefully that was taken into consideration.

ETA: I got approved! I'll leave this topic solved for the time being.

My first topic! Woo! Now to the actual contents of it...

I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 660, it's my third one (I've had to RMA it twice). I've noticed a problem with the second card I got through RMA, it runs significantly hotter. With the first one I had, it ran @ ~ 60 degrees C under load. With the current one, it runs @ ~ 80 degrees C, causing thermal throttling and the fan to run at max speed. I am now unable to play games such as Black Ops II with maxed out settings because of throttling. Should I RMA this card yet again, or should I replace the thermal paste/cooler? Thanks in advance!

RMA it. Why did you RMA the others?

I have no idea what the warranty is on opening the cooler of the card, and replacing the thermal paste. But if you can do that without voiding the warranty, I would highly reccomend opening it and replacing the thermal paste. Since that card is not particularly a newer card, it may have some manufactoring issues, and reapplying thermal paste is not very difficult. Check your warranty and see if you can open it just incase it does not fix the problem and you need to RMA it again.

I would return it and get it from amazon (I am a newegg masterrace person) however that is a bit ridiculous and i think they may be having issues.

I'd replace the TIM first. removing the cooler probably doesn't void the warranty

in reality its a 660...

its the bronze of two generations ago, i would assume newer games (even black ops II) would make it work hard AF when maxed.

Thanks again for all the replies! Since I can remove the cooler without voiding the warranty, I'll go ahead and replace the thermal paste first. If that doesn't work, I'll RMA it again, test and sell it, then I will get a 960 or a 970.

RMA it. Why did you RMA the others?

The first two were because of fan failure + coil whine.

I haven't tested it yet, but I will one of these days. I have an old AMD Athlon 64 X2 (AMD's first dual core) machine that still runs. I might even compare temps with different toothpaste.

If the experiment fails, you'll at least have a minty fresh CPU.

theoretically if you lap the CPU and cooler almost perfectly flat, high mounting pressure with a thin toothpaste could yeild better temps than thick thermal compounds that can't spread as thin.
