Municipal Internet

Should cities in the US take apart in municipal internet services for there citizens instead of waiting on ISP to give them the faster broadband internet, because working in a rural comunity as a pc repair man seeing people with 2  barely 1 mb/s internet speed it unfair but sense AT&T will not push any line out that what they are stuck with and the fasted in the town at a residential level is 20 mb/s?

In the US it won't happen for a while.

Depends on whether or not the community can afford the investment in the first place. Whether it will truly be a worth while investment, I mean why does a village of farmers need fibre? And Whether or not the voting citizens would support it. Plus it just adds another price of infrastructure for the city to maintain - I guess its either bad thing or a good thing - but then the tax payers are paying to fix it rather than a consumer.

It is definitely worth while for larger centres but then it would be interesting to see what the cost of running a municipal service vs the cost of Comcast running the network.

First you have to break the iron grip isps have on most cities (through anti competitive deals). I would love to see it done though, but we are a long ways off in the u.s. before it catches on.

Google fiber can't come soon enough.
