I was wondering if it is possible to install a new os on a new SDD without losing my documents from my HDD that I use now. Do I have to clone the HDD or can I simply run the SDD as boot-drive and the old HDD as a separate disk, without having any interference between the drives?

Yes, you can just install a new OS on your SSD and grab the stuff from your old HDD afterwards.

You could do that too, but most of the time, my personal recommendation is to do a fresh install.

How much space did you use on your HDD and how big is your SSD?

I used clonex i think is what its called to clone my old HDD to my new SSD directly. But i cloned the entire thing. First i did a massive clean up and defrag on the HDD then after the transfer I did the same thing on the SSD. no problems at all. I was new to SSD and was amazed how quick it defragged compared to a HDD.

You can tell your a nerd when a fast defrag makes you happy lol

I am thinking about buying a 240 GB SSD, haven't really decided on what brand. I am currently using about 800 GB on my main HDD. But I really have to clean up the HDD. What brand of SSD would you recommend and any methods of cleaning up my HDD?

Ugghh, sorry to tell you, but you NEVER EVER should defrag your SSD, it will destroy it fairly quickly.

Samsung 840 Pro or Basic depending how much you use it.

For cleanup, sry i have no idea, i always store all my data on a different drive, and if needed i can just do a fresh install.

I have heard that the samsung 840 is a good SSD, but I think it lacks in write speed.

Only the basic variant. The Pro version got great write speeds.  (Also write speeds arent that interesting for a bootdrive)

I would just back up all your stuff that you wanna keep on a separate drive and do a fresh install. All i hear about cloning a OS is problems in the future. Anyone that knows a thing or two about a PC would tell you to not bother with cloning software.

You have an external hard drive?

If you have a Samsung ssd then use the included software I would recommend doing a fresh install and bringing everything over manually cause then you ssd doesn't have junk from old program's and other files you don't need anymore.

I am thinking about buying a Kingston hyperx 3k 240 gb.

You could backup all your personal stuff to your external hard drive and format your internal one and then copy everything back.
