I've heard a few times in the past that if you plug in a cable in a certain port it disable another port or something weird like that.

I've got two monitors that are arriving and I'm going to use my current one.

DVI-D

HDMI

Display Port.

Graphics card is an EVGA GTX 970.

what output the monitors will be running?

i say HDMI and Displayport will do the trick

or get Displayport Hub or converters from DIsplayport to HDMI

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

You can't use 2xDVI and 1xHDMI at the same time.

If you want 3 displays, one of them has to use display port (which is the case for you at the moment)

That used to be true for older AMD cards, but they have dropped the display port requirement.

Oh, ok cool.

Since when is this not true anymore? I thought this was on the 270X still so..

That could still be true if 270x is a rebrand of some older card (7850/7950 or whatever it was) that did't support any output comb. I remember 290/290x don't need DP for 3rd screen.

In fact you can run 6 screens of 290x single car using 2xDVI + HDMI + 3 displays via DP hub
