You have a few choices for an upgrade, them being;

GTX 970 Gigabyte Windforce

GTX 970 MSI Twin Frozr V

And, the GTX 970 EVGA FTW.

I wouldn't recommend any other GTX 970, but at the end of the day, they all perform around the same.

im getting an Intel Core i7-4790K for my setup and i was wondering if i should upgrade my gpu (mis twin froar III r7870) as well to avoid bottleneck and if i  do have to upgrade what card do you recommend

It depends on how much you're looking to spend on a CPU and GPU

holy freaking balls it's like Nvidia has stamped GTX 970 on all of your minds over top of everything else you people know... there are other GPUs out there aside from the GTX 970! OP hasn't even stated a budget, so not appropriate to jump in and suggest 970 right away, which so many people have been doing lately on this forum. For all we know, he could possibly afford two 295X2's.

2 970s can go head to head with one r9 295x2. 3 980s cost as much as 2 r9 295x2 and perform around the same while consuming less power.

I think it's a good card to suggest to anyone in general. It has a sweet price to performance and if the op says they have a problem with the suggestion, we can always revise it :P

Use the 7870 for a while. It's still a great card.

Everyone will say 970. I recommend a 290 or 290x. They go for about 300.

970 is only a bit more than the 290X and is really worth it in terms of cooling & audibility. The 290 is a good deal, however.

Well, one wouldn't know if the cooling and noise is a factor for this person, personally I couldn't care less about noise, but that is very subjective.

But I'm afraid that someone not caring about audibility has a slim chance of being the case, and in the future depending on the 290X he selects crossfire could have major heat issues depending on his cooler selection, whilst basically any 970 will be fine in SLI.

True, but with non-stock coolers, its a lot less of an issue, not to mention if or if not more money will be available for 3rd party cooling, like a 3rd party GPU cooler or even a custom loop water cooler.

If he has that kind of money he should just get two 980s and a custom loop, and even with non-reference cards 290X crossfire is VERY hot
