Z97 lets you Overclock the CPU H97 not really

Z97 can overclock

H97 cannot as soon as a microcode patch is released

Z97 lets you Overclock the CPU H97 not really

An H97 is a locked motherboard and a z97 is an unlocked motherboard.

thank you! so at least I won't have to wonder if the motherboard can overclock as long as it's a Z97? since I'm still searching.

Correct. And with that chipset, the CPU matters for overclocking, that's just luck of the draw, so Dont get drawn in on superOC marketing bs. Motherboard makes almost no difference on overclocks with z97.

you mean to say that as long as my CPU is a K series (the ones for overclocking), I'll just need to get a Z97 that matches the specs I'll need?

Correct. How well your CPU overclocks is just up to getting lucky. Just find a sexy motherboard that has things you like.

Also, make the socket is the same (1150) but that's obvious. I reccomend the MSI boards. They're pretty good.
