I would but I don't believe it is the best option.

No matter what they are going to monitor our communications, I would rather have it done in public than in private.

That's exactly what this is for, it's to make them do it publicly as apposed to privately. Your view says you should sign it.

Maybe recent events are as public as it gets and by signing petitions like this to pass legislation that prevents organizations such as the NSA from using surveillance technology you will only drive them deeper, except this time they cannot prosecute you through the courts and will have to find other ways to take action.

At the end of the day, I'm not going to fuel this paranoia, both sides need to start trusting each other more.

I might regret those words when I'm locked up in some internment camp for breaking internet laws, but I just can't see it happening, but then again I'm not wearing my tinfoil hat so who knows...

Governments are more scared of us than we are of them, that's the reason for all this nonsense. We will be laughing about this in 20 years time when there is something new to worry about. This is nothing compared to the paranoia of the Cold War era.

The events that have been publicized are old(have been going on for a while), they were leaked and would have not seen the light of day for a long time. The idea that you could be locked up in some camp for something is not out of the question, it's what the US did to the Japanese in the states in WW2. The real issue here is that they can obtain non-public data about (masses of) people without a warrant, it's completely unconstitutional. There is a reason that it's a felony to look at someone's mail without a warrant, the same should be true for an encrypted (or private) email or a private telephone call.

I live in the UK but I've kind of just come to accept that what ever I put online is public in a sense. If someone wants to see something so badly, they will see it.

Especially when the UK is spying on people overseas.

Maybe you are missing my point, I agree that it is wrong to monitor peoples private communications and would prefer that it doesn't happen, but I don't think signing a petition is going to stop this, my point is that it will make things worse.

I am glad this was all brought to light recently, but I don't think we should aggravate the paranoia, forcing them to change strategy. I would rather they operate the same way that I always assumed they did. I don't understand why people think this is shocking, I always took this for granted.

Intercepting private messages has been going on for 1000s of years, for every form of communication you can bet that there is someone out there who wants to know what you are saying, laws are not going to completely prevent this, just as laws do not completely prevent crime.

Your best bet is to be careful about what you send over the internet, if you really have something that you need to hide from these organizations, which I don't see any reason why you should, then take every precaution not to get caught. The idea that you can somehow censor the internet to them is ridiculous and vice versa.

These are just my thoughts on the subject, I believe the petition has it's heart in the right place, and I am not trying to convince anyone of my beliefs, If you believe signing it is the best solution, then please do... Do not be swayed by my comments. I can only speak for myself and my circumstances may be different to yours.

The real problem isn't the Government but the people.

If you talk (aka e-mail, post in forums, and what not) in an unencrypted/open fashion guess what? Anyone can track you. To begin with the companies providing the infrastructure of the service (cell, internet, etc.). Is it right? Well depends, if you eaves drop on a conversation by accident is the information you get repeatable or repeated or used in any fashion? Or do you wipe your brain of it?

Give people (aka Government/Companies) the ease to eaves drop on you and well they will, I bet you have never ever read your contact for electronic comm. have you. No clause for not spying on you or not sending incriminating info to the authorities.

Suckers.... (hey that includes me   )

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

What makes you think that that signing a petition is going to stop them? Now we know they do things under our noses so they will just do it again.

Petitions a solution for those who don't want actually do something but think passing the buck via a petition is a viable solution. Hey somebody will do something if there are thousands of random names signed on a sheet of paper   Cant' wait till the government worker gets the sheets and just files them under petitions against the government (aka trash can).

They're the same thing..

a long time ago they weren't...  tin foil used to taste bad though they were stronger. The aluminum however bend easier thus covering food as well as shaping better foil hats would be easier. Also aluminum is a better conductor than thin and will thus be better at keeping out electromagnetic waves.
