Which should I get?

Go to solution Solved by minibois,

Microcenter has a big gap there. the 970 is $350, and the 980 is $580. Seems like a lot of money for such a small performance increase.

980 is indeed pretty expensive for what it does over a 970. It is however still the fastest single GPU.

I think 970 would be just fine for you. If you really want to go to 1440p or 4K you can add a second one, so you are pretty future proof.

1080p gaming on a 970 is still VERY good.

Which GPU should I get for 1080p gaming on high/ultra settings at upwards of 40 fps?

Budget?

I guess you're on a budget? 270(x) or 750 Ti plus. But that's like the lowest you should go..

Big budget. Anything less than... I'll say $500.

GTX 970 or R9 290X if you prefer AMD only stuff.

I'd probably recommend a 970, or unless you can stretch an extra $50 or so for a 980.  This is takin within consideration of us prices @ newegg.

The specific models are up to you, they all perform quite well. But a lot of people prefer the G1 version.

Paired with a good CPU (Which I think you do have, since you planning on getting a 500 dollars GPU) you will play games on 1080p flawlessly. Like 80+fps flawless.
