Hi

One of my friends bought i5 4690K yesterday and after fucking my brain he learned a little about over clocking where i also know not more then 20% of it. ROFL.

anyways my Question is

He is overclocked on

 4.5ghz at 1.242v  58C

 4.6ghz 1.268v      64C

 4.7 at 1.3201v     72C

 4.8 at 1.3820v     77C

 4.9 at 1.41xxV     83C

All values are of stable positions for 1 hour and all temps are tops on AIDA64 stress test all options check including HDD and SSD.

i told him to stay on 4.5 ghz .or tops 4.6 ghz . coz i don't see any benefit in increasing 300mhz and for that much voltage.

what do you say?

There isn't a significant performance boost in gaming from overclocking (for i5s)(for most games). Only go really high for bragging rights.

his chip is done on 4.9ghz . no more increase possible . he is playing BF-4 and Far cry  4  will there be a performance boost in these game if he overclock it or staying on stock will be a good option ?

I would stay in the 4.5ghz range, it will be quieter and will perform basically as well. It will be fine like that for a few years, and then you may want to turn it up a little.

Stock would no doubt giv the GPU full ability and the game will run flawless.

The times when the overclock comes into play is certain times of heavy CPU usage (amount of objects in a scene) when the scenes drops performance for a split second and then rises back up.

This is known as an FPS drop, and where the MinimumFPS values are very important. An overclocked CPU could 'theoretically - depending on the situation' see less of a dip and a higher MIN-FPS.

Higher Min-FPS gives smoother motion and less stutters/hitching when something does cause a dip.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

@OCing Noob

I would say tell him to do 4.5GHz at 1.25V (Not 1.242). That way it's cool but still performs very well

nahh his graphics card is most likely the limiting factor in every games, i would save overclock for in a couple years when the CPU will no longer cut it after he'd buy a brand new graphics card.

I would aim for 4ghz flat with the lowest possible voltage for stability.

what about downclocking to 4ghz for few years ? i'm asking about mine i'm running on 1.951V 4.5 ghz 51C tops. my chip is capable of doing 5.13ghz on 1.351V.

Wait until your pushing its limits at stock before you OC.

In two years or so.

I say you are right. There is no benefit from pushing it too high, especially for games.

Its just gonna eat more power, generate more heat and have a reduced lifespan.
