I was wondering would these work when attached to say a metal hard drive tray that has been removed from the case and set aside? Specifically a Define R5 case. Also, what about those little magnetic bowls Linus uses for screws? What is the proper name for those handy little things?

I don't know there proper name but I call them lifesavers. Also, no i would not use a hard drive tray. The tray would be to small and would just build up a charge with you.

Take yo shirt off. Leave dem boxers on. wrap your legs around the PC case while you work on it. Problem solved.

The whole point of a grounding wrist strap is to actually connect with a ground (earth). Grabbing any old metal object and connecting to that is the same thing as not wearing the strap at all. Connect to a plugged-in PSU, or a wall adapter for the strap.
