Hello all,

This is my first post on LinusTech tips and I am needing some help with what I'm looking to build. I'm going for a black and silver build, with a $1400 budget, and using some parts from my old Build. I will be doing some video, picture editing, and gaming. Games I want to able to play are Battlefield 3, Crysis 2 and 3, Starcraft 2, MineCraft, TeamFortress 2, and eventually Battlefield 4 when it comes out.  I will also be doing normal web browsing, and playing music. I would also like to be able to overclock this machine up to between 4.2ghz and 4.5ghz, as this will be my first time overclocking a computer.

here is what I am looking to get:

Intel Core i5 3570K

Asus sabertooth z77 mb

corsair vegenance pro 16GB (8GB x2) ddr3 1600 (black and silver set)

Corsair h100i

Asus GTX 780 reference design VC

Here is what I currently have from my old build that I will be inc. in my upgraded rig.

Seagate 1TB 7200rpm drive for all my media

WD 1TB 7200RPM black drive for games

Samsung 840 Pro 128gb SSD boot drive

Corsair SP120 fans x6

Corsair TX750W 750 watt power supply.

CoolerMaster HAF 932 case

LiteOn Blu-ray reader

Razer Ultimate BlackWidow 2013 Mechanical Keyboard

MadCatz rat MMO 7 gaming mouse

CyberSnipa keyboard and Mouse gaming mat

Original 230mm cooling fans on side and front panel

This what my old computer was that I upgraded too back 2009, and I have made several upgrades over time.

Intel Core 2 duo e8400

Asus Maximus 2 mb

Corsair Dominator 8gb of ddr2 800 (2gb x4)

XFX 6670 1GB VC

Coolermaster V8 cpu cooler and heatsink

Seagate 1TB 7200rpm drive for all my media

WD 1TB 7200RPM black drive for games

Samsung 840 Pro 128gb SSD boot drive

Corsair SP120 fans x6

Corsair TX750W 750 watt power supply.

CoolerMaster HAF 932 case

LiteOn sata Blu-ray reader

HP PATA DVD WRITER w/Lightscribe

RGB LED light kit from Ikea for internal lighting effect.

Razer Ultimate BlackWidow 2013 Mechanical Keyboard

MadCatz rat MMO 7 gaming mouse

CyberSnipa keyboard and Mouse gaming mat

Original 230mm cooling fans on side and front panel, removed the red LED fan.

I would also like to be able to do some mods to my case as well, like painting the internals black instead of the stock silver color. I would also like to get the full window side panel that CM offers here http://www.cmstore-usa.com/haf-932-transparent-acrylic-side-window-panel/

Please tell me what you guys think and also any helpful tips for parts, modding it and/or guides for overclocking the cpu.

Hi @Schwike88,

Overall, it look like a good build for the budget and use case you presented. I have one thing to ask though, why are do you want the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard?

I ask because the plastic "shield" is just that, a thin sheet of plastic. It holds heat against the motherboard, and people who have taken it off usually report their temps on the motherboard going down by up to 5C.

If you want it for it's looks, and aren't worried about the heat (it wouldn't affect it much honestly, I'd just avoid extra heat when I can), then it's fine. Just asking.

Thank you everyone for your answers. To answer a couple of questions that have been asked I wanted to go with Ivy bridge as I'm just unsure on the performance of the haswell CPUs' from what I've seen in several videos is that it only has a 10% performance gain over ivy bridge. On the question of the 770 I rather go with the 780 as I can get the same shroud on the 780 that comes on the Titan a lot easier then getting a 770 with the same shroud. It's been harder to find the reference design 770 with the stock cooler and not one with an aftermarket cooler. Also I was looking into the msi mb that have the OC genie tech in it, what is y'all's opinion on that for a newbie overclocker? On wanting the Asus Sabertooth z77 I like the clean look to it and I'm not too worried about the heat I took an internal temp of my system and the internal temp was about 79 degrees Fahrenheit. My house is kept pretty cool around 68 degree all day so I'm not to worried about the mb getting too warm, but could y'all give me some additional Mb options that would also be easy to overclock since I'm new to overclocking plus possibly swapping out the z77 mb and ivy bridge CPU for haswell and a z87 board. Once again thanks guys and keep the suggestions, and tips coming I'm always welcome to them

OC genie isn't a bad option for a newbie overclocker. You'll probably jump into doing it manually soon afterwards anyway. It's not too difficult as there are plenty of guides online.

Just about any motherboard with a uefi bios makes it a cinch to overclock. You can always come back to the forums for specific help.

I would still avoid the sabertooth though. It just seems like a waste of money for a plastic shroud. If I wanetd the black color, I'd just grab a cheaper Asrock z77 board. Something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z77pro3 won't be the most impressive overclocker but it will do what you need just fine.

@WoodenMarker I have been thinking it over on the Asus sabertooth and I think your guys are right for the money I can save on the mb I could do a little bit more on the build. I have been thinking about going with haswell instead of ivy bridge, and I was looking at going with the 4670k and msi z87-gd65 or the Asus maximus view hero motherboard. Any thoughts on those? I was mainly looking at those two cause I've seen on several sites its very easy to overclock on those and it would perfect for a beginner

Sorry meant the Asus maximus 6 hero mb

You can go with the cheapest z87 and you'll still be fine. Only get a more expensive mobo if you think you can actually use its features.

I've been looking around at the a lot the z87 boards currently available, and Im not seeing really anything that I would like to put in my build. That and the choices on mbs for haswell is still very limited. I think I will go with the Ivy Bridge for my build.

I've updated my list of upgrades now for my build

Intel Core i5 3570k

MSI Z77A-GD65 (non-gaming edition)

Asus GTX 780

Corsair h100i

corsair vegenance pro 16GB (8GB x2) ddr3 1600 (black and silver set)

New price of upgrade componets is about $1300, and my budget is about 1400.00

Can anyone recommend either a really go pair of over the head headphones, and possibly a decent sound card. I can extend my budget to add those items. just need to know what is a good set of headphones and a soundcard?

I've also got 3570K and MSI Z77A-GD65, solid board/CPU combo, no complaints.

According to Linus you can't go wrong with ANY Xonar card, just pick one that's in your budget. I have just a cheap Xonar DGX myself and it's worlds better than the onboard.

yup, get any Asus Xonar audio card, preferably pci-x(future proof) and I would suggest Audio Technica's ATH-M50 for about $150-$170 or if you can't afford them or want open-air desing go for ATH-AD700 i think, I heard a lot of good for both :D

Alright so I have made some changes to my upgrade list. I will be downsizing on my case

I'm thinking about going with either a corsair 650d or the new corsair 540R air series.

Also I want to get a fully modular psu, can y'all recommend one? I want one thats under 800w and under $150?

Are you planning to sli?

And why under 800w? More headroom doesn't hurt.

I'm trying to stay in budget and I want a modular to semi-modular power supply and in order to keep within my budget, I need to stick with less than 800w unless I can find a great deal.

How's this look? http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-tx850m

You should go with the haswell platform. Haswell build is pretty much the same price anyway.

Here's a suggestion for a Z87 build:

Intel Core i5 4670K

Asus Gryphon Z87 / Asus Z87 Plus

Corsair Vengeance Pro Blue 2x 8GB

Corsair H100i

Corsair AX760

EVGA/Asus GTX-780

Core i7 4820K  |  NH-D14 | Rampage IV Extreme | Asus R9 280X DC2T | 8GB G.Skill TridentX | 120GB Samsung 840 | NZXT H440  |  Be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 650W

The reason I'm not going with the haswell is that from what I have seen here on the forums and from friends of mine they say that the haswell chips are not overclocking well, I don't know if it's the chips or the motherboards but it seems to be across the board on the chips

Thats not too bad I will probably go with that then, also is it better to buy everything at once or buy it overtime?

It's better to buy it all at once since your build should revolve around item prices and those change all the time. If you plan to build it later, it's better to wait till you can buy it all at once and do a quick check on the prices before you order.
