Getting a new computer with 2 monitors at 1080 and was wondering for the 980 reference for EVGA is it worth the extra money for the oc card or will the regular one be fine? I will get another card in the future when I have the budget for it. Will be playing Star Citizen when it comes out but as of right now I do not play any AAA games. Suggestions and reasons why?

I'd say the regular would be fine.

The 980 isn't really worth getting over the much cheaper 970.

980 is 1. Overkill for 1080p, and 2. A horrible value.

The 970 is 10-30% worse (usually the former) in most games and is nearly half the price. I highly suggest you get the 970 instead, or if you want the best value, a R9 290.

But in reality, you should probably wait as Star Citizen will not be out for more than a year and there will likely be much better cards out by then (price/performance wise). So if you don't need the performance now, I say wait.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

That is what my thinking was

I know but those frames per second though.

Yes but I need to build a system now with a graphics card so I don't really have a choice to wait.

Feel free to get the 980 if money isn't really an issue but do note that it's pretty darn overkill for 1080p and costs much more than the not-too-far-behind 970.

If you don't do any AAA gaming now just run on the HD 4600 graphics integrated with your i5/i7. No reason to blow $600 on a reference 980 right now for a game that won't release for a year. By the time Star Citizen releases you can pay a lot less to get the next Nvidia 70-series card that will probably be better than the 980. Last generation the GTX 770 was a GTX 680 with higher clocks. This generation the 970 is better than the 780 and has an extra 1GB of VRAM.

This is such BS. I can understand us regular users parroting this misinformation but you are a moderator O_o.

GTX 970 is about 350 before tax (400 after tax)

GTX 980 is about 550 before tax (600 after tax)

So we are talking about a 200 dollar difference.

Now once the GTX 980 is OC'd (which honestly you should do if you buy a 980), you are paying about 100 extra for performance and 100 extra for name brand 980.

So bottom line is it doesn't cost "much" more than the 970. It's about 100 dollars extra which in the grand scheme of things is like ~7% the cost of a PC.

As for overkill at 980.. well it's one of the few cards that could play AC Unity--maxed out settings--at launch.

Well
a) it doesn't matter because either way you have to manually OC it to the limit. (like 1400+ mhz)
B) it doesn't look like they are producing a lot of the non SC versions so the stock isn't great.

The 970 is closer to $330 depending on the model.

It's $200+ (~40%) more for a 10-20% performance increase between the 970 and 980.

the evga acx card is like 340 and becomes 370 after tax.

~40% more for like ~20% more performance =

not the best bang for the buck

but equates to something like 100 of that extra being actual performance and 100 being top-of-the-line markup.

In context it's better than the markup on most LCD monitors and is like 5-7% of the cost of a 4790k rig with all the dressings. (cpu coolers, case, ssd, etc)

Performance difference between 970 and 980 don't justify the extra cost. Get 970 and keep the extra money for a 2nd card.

A bad value that isn't as bad as other bad values is still a bad value.

It's not a bad value tho.

That's the logically fancy of the best bang for the buck being the end-all and be-all of value.

And if that were the case then everyone would be rocking core i5s.

In other words sometimes it's worth it to get the higher-end product even if it does cost a bit extra.

The jump from an i5 to an i7 is worth it if the extra threads are needed. The difference can be between editing with and without hiccups. The jump from a 970 to a 980 is only worth it if the extra performance is needed and isn't the same as i5 --> i7 unless the 970 isn't powerful enough.
