As for Nvidia, I'm not really bothered, but for AMD I would definitely get a non reference cooler because my freind has a r9-290x reference and oh my god, it is soooooo loud.

If I was going nvidia SLI I would probably get the reference cooler, but corssfire AMD, I would still get a non-reference cooler.

I usually never buy reference amd cards, but I did with the r9 290x, it looks so damn good. And because it was cheaper.

Always non-reference. It doesn't matter if its AMD or Nvidia, they will run cooler and quieter. Also, most non reference cards have better power delivery.

Nvidia - Wouldn't bother me really.

AMD - Non Ref cooler for sure. At least until they make the cooler better or make their chips more efficient.

Always Reference unless, there are no reference cards available.

AMD: Non-reference.

Nvidia: Reference if you care for looks.

Sig under construction.

For SLI I would go for the reference card if using more than two or if unable to give a one slot gap, though even then I may still go for reference.

For single card use it could be either with nvidia

He missed quite a bit in that one. Gonna give a lot of the newbies the wrong impression. I imagine it helped a few though.

If you have a case with bad airflow or not much room like a Mini-ITX then considering a reference model is usually a good idea.

However, the reference AMD cooler doesn't work very well at all and is incredibly loud, when compared to Nvidia's reference cooler which actually does a pretty decent job and isn't particularly loud.

With a case with great airflow then running a non-reference will be your best bet, the better cooling on the gpu itself and the lower noise especially on the 970/980 non-reference cards which sometimes have fans that only turn on above usually 65c or 60c, means that you have very quiet but fantastic cooling.

In the real world though, especially in the second hand graphics card market, the price of reference cards, especially AMD ones with there jet engine noise level coolers actually go for really cheap now, so if you can live with the noise and heat (headphones and a room fan) then you can save yourself a decent chuck of money on them, the performance will be less and you wont have anywhere near as much thermal headroom but the saved money can be used in buying other components.

I have done quite a few 'reference vs non-reference' gpu showdowns on my channel if you are interested :)

Since the video Linus posted today, probably refference NVidia and AMD only hd 7xxx, not r9.

Always non-referance. In my opinion, unless you really like the look of referance cards.
