Next month I am hoping to get a new GPU,  I am currently running 4 monitors off of a single GTX 660 ti, Gaming on 3 most of the time and watching a film on the 4th.

So do I get ?

1x GTX 970
2x GTX 970 in SLI
(wouldn't be able to get the 2nd until February/March )
1x GTX 980 (Wouldn't be able to get until February/March )
2x GTX 980 in SLI   (Wouldn't be able to get the first card until February/March, and the 2nd 980 a couple of months later)

Wait and see what comes out next. (Rather not, but will if its within the next 3-4 months)

What would you suggest for me to be able to play on Ultra 1080p 60FPS in surround

Current specs

  • CPU
    AMD FX-8350
  • Motherboard
    Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
  • RAM
    GeIL EVO Veloce Red 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1866MHz
  • GPU
Asus GeForce GTX 660TI Directcu II 2GB

Incase anyone is thinking I should change the CPU I will be switching to intel i7 later in the year (picked i7 as I will be rendering daily), I keep hitting 100% on the 8350 daily (while not rendering, just overloading it by multitasking) and its extremely annoying.

Thanks in advance for your replies :D

Get a 970 and add another later if you feel you need to.

AS for your cpu hitting 100% when rendering--that's normal. You should be worried if it didn't do that.

Don't change your CPU unless you are feeling really bad dips as CPU doesn't matter at that high of a resolution.  It's for rendering nvm.

A single 970 should be fine for most things, if not, you can get another one.

980 is a waste of money.

True, but once or twice a day it will hit 100% slow down my system and I am not even doing much with it.

Ok I will get a 970 then, just wasn't sure as I haven't kept up to date with these new cards, so not sure what they are capable of and I keep hearing that I would need 2x 980s to play in surround.

He said when not rendering. That is just he is doing too much multitasking on a weak cpu. :)

The 8350 is great for multitasking. That seems more like an issue with programs than the cpu.

It was, being so old, even the 4690k beats it.

In sheer gaming performance, the 4690k does beat it. The two are on a more even ground for multitasking.

Yes, they are about the same for multi tasking. You are (as usual) correct about it having a lot to do with the programs he is using. I just wanted to point out that the 8350 is not the cpu it was when it launched.

5760x1080 is fairly demanding, only about 25% fewer pixels than 4K.  A single 970 should do alright in most games, though you may find that you'll want a second 970 eventually to keep newer/more demanding games at 60 FPS more often.

You don't need two 980's to play. Absolute statements like that can't possibly be accurate without at least naming a specific game.

I do use a lot of programs, but everything could be fine for a couple of hours and then its like it trips over itself and just shoots up to 100% slowing down the system for a minute, and then it goes back to normal. It doesn't happen a lot maybe once a day or once every other day, I am always working and doing things fast, so something slowing me down even for a minute is very annoying. It has done very well, in use about 12 - 14 hours a day for around 2 years, first 6 months it used the stock cooler hitting 60c daily.

Think I will get a EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0

The 8350 WAS a good cpu 3 years ago but it is showing it's age.  That is an odd issue though. I need some sleep but I will think about any causes and let you know tomorrow, what is your ram usage when it does that?

What kind of programs are you using?

Programs like Skype can cause issues like that.

Yes Skype is one of the programs I am using.

I am running windows 8.1, with Star8, ModernMix, Deskscapes (using a Static wallpaper), Malwarebyte Premium, WhatPulse, Teamviewer, Raptr, Rainmeter (Using a static theme, rarely uses more than 1.5% CPU). Actually now that I am looking for what is running I am noticing things that shouldn't be running at startup, fixing those now.

Not a big issue as I have be wanting to get an i7 build for ages, but never had enough money when I do upgrade this one will be turned into a server, that will be used for a ton of things.

Thanks for your Help. :D
