What do I need to know about AM3+

Java

Hi, I was looking into upgrading my old CPU (FX-6120) to a newer model, such as the FX-9590.  The problem is that I'm not sure what information I need in order to do this. What I do know is that my processor uses a AM3+ socket.  Is that all I need to know to make an upgrade?

Thanks,

~Java

I believe 9590 needs 8+2 phase power design motherboard and really beefy motherboard cooling or else you're looking at a possible fire situation.

Honestly 9590 is a horrible value.

what do you mean by 8+2 phase power design? Also, if the 9590 is bad value, what should I look into?

you will probably need to change the mainboard, buy the watercooled edition of the 9590 or aftermarket good air cpu cooler or watercooler.

You could save money with changing to an 8320/8350 and overclock it yourself.

The 9590 draws a ridiculous amount of power, and unless you have a high end 990 AM3+ board, it's likely going to throttle to hell, not work, or cause a fire.

I recommend either an 8320 if your motherboard supports it (can you tell me what yours is?) if not, a locked i5 or i3 (I'm assuming you're gaming).

The FX-9590 is not worth it, I would rather get an locked i7 and a cheap mainboard, before messing around with high temperatures, very high powerconsumption and the fact that it could maybe wreck my mainboard.
