Storage Spaces

Hey,

So I'm running storage spaces for the moment as an alternative to setting up Flexraid. I've got 8 1TB drives giving me 4.25TB parity. My issue is the ridiculously slow write speeds. I'm hovering between 10 and 20MB/s while transferring nearly 1TB of .5-3GB files. Anyone else ever had this issue with storage spaces? CPU and RAM usage on the NAS are fairly standard at 2GB/4GB and ~10% CPU usage (G3258)

That is how Storage Spaces work. It is only made for high read loads and not write speeds. You will have to go to a mirror setup if you want higher write speeds.

The information is being processed for parity and that gives the slow write speeds.

The best way around it is hardware raid with BBU and on-board cache

FYI: The average write speed is about 20-25.

I understand that they're low but I'm currently getting 6MB/s which is a bit ridiculous.

From my own research and understanding, this is rather normal.  Write speeds under 10MB/s are pretty standard for Storage Spaces.  It is designed for the casual user.  You are looking for enterprise level functionality, whether you think it is or not.  High speed parity raid is not a consumer level product, prosumer at least.  But you can get high end used raid cards on ebay for $100, if you are really wanting that kind of performance.
