Fast internet, but videos always buffer and drop resolution

Hi everyone, 

 

Back in October my modem and router both crapped out on me, so I switched to an all in one unit from comcast (my mom refuses to drop the voip home phone so I needed a comcast provided modem anyway). It worked great for a while. Now I am back in town for winter break and our connection is all messed up. We were having issues with range, but those seemed to resolve themselves. I have done a ton of speed tests throughout the house and they are always above 30 mbps, usually closer to the 75 mbps area. Browsing the internet works fine, but we have a few issues.

 

1. videos, no matter what site or player buffer and then drop resolution to the lowest possible

2. our phones usually only get about 5mbps connections no matter what

3. My brother's xbox 360 and xbox one both have connection issues even with good speeds and a strong signal. 

 

I tried plugging an old router into it and putting the all in one in bridged mode but that made everything super slow, and I think that the old router is mostly to blame for that. 

 

Should I go out and but a nice new router and try bridged mode again? Or just change settings on the all in one? It is a comcast provided one but still allows most settings to be changed.

Try resetting the modem/router first

Bring it up to your ISP, make a big deal about it to them and they might just send a maintenance person out to help you.

I have reset the router several times. Each time grants a few minutes of fully functional internet. We did have someone from comcast come, and had to deal with the 6hr gap in time they told us he might show up during. He connected a laptop to our network, turned around to the island in our kitchen (so about 4ft from the router) and ran a speed test . He got 50mbps and said that was good and left after charging us $50. He also said that if we wanted to use the internet on any other floor of our house we should connect our own router to the all in one. But even watching videos in the living room (no wall between the router and computer) we still took a 45min to watch a 27min video because of buffering issues.

My mom that knows nothing about technology was the only one home. I would have made him do more, but I was at work trying to earn as much money over winter break as possible before returning to school next semester.

What modem do you have? Sometimes old modems lead to major problems. Old firmware, outdated technology, or it isn't optimized for today's speed or amount of users on it at once.

Everything works fine if I connect my laptop with an ethernet cable. But my family didn't go for the idea of running ethernet cables to each room or spending a ton of money on powerline.

To me this seems like a bandwidth issue. We are nowhere near our data cap (that comcast claims was removed anyway) and our speeds are fine. To be youtube HD certified the connection only needs to be like 6mbps. The connection in my dorm room is like 8mbps and I can stream 1080p videos all day without issues. 

 

We have the xfinity x1 platform now and it seems like every update to the router or cable box just makes things worse. Our internet connection was fine with a 7 year old modem until that finally died on us. The UI for the cable box is terrible and only gets worse. They had it figured out 10 years ago with the older models. We have put up with a lot of crap from comcast and I would love to switch to verizon fios and see if we could get a better package with our cell phones, but fios is not offered on our side of the street yet. I would get my own modem and router (or a better all in one), but it would not pay off. My mom wants to keep our home phone which requires the comcast modem and we save more money by keeping the package with the phone that we would if we dropped the home phone and stopped renting the all in one from them.

I sent flexin1981 a private message asking him to take a look at the thread when he gets a chance. In the mean time, what could be causing interference with the network? Nothing else has really changed since we changed the router/modem. No crazy new devices (besides the xbox one last night). It isn't like the microwave is running all the time. The only thing that I can think of is the fridge a few feet away is on its way out. But it wouldn't make sense for the fridge to cause interference as it is the cheapest one we could find with no extra features at all, so it isnt a fancy one with a screen or anything. And as far as I know, there is nothing in a normal fridge that messes with the 2.4ghz or 5ghz bands.

Our old network ran fine with many rc items running, especially on the 2.4ghz bands (hobby grade rc was my main hobby before college). But all of my rc stuff has been boxed up without batteries for months. The neighbors to the right of us are very unlikely to have that kind of stuff. I suppose the little kid too the left of us might have something but it wouldn't be running all the time, especially late at night. 

 

 

Edit: now that I think about it, our neighbor to the left is some sort of IT guy for a large company but last time I was there he also had rented equipment from comcast.

Hey Guys, 

 

Thanks to @cesrai for the shout on this one :-) seem like I have gained a name as the interference king LOL.

 

As for this situation my first port of call would be to check out the following thread (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/275605-wifi-randomly-disconnects/).

 

The troubleshooting steps there would still be valid in this case to check for interference. 

 

Also have you checked the speed from the AP if you sit right next to it, the reason that I say this is that all AP's will sacrifice speed for distance.

 

Another test that you can do is test for packet loss on the WiFi is to ping 8.8.8.8 with a repeat of 1000 and see how much loss you get (if any) here is the windows command.

ping 8.8.8.8 -n 1000 -l 1500

If you have any packet loss this is another indication of either interference or trouble in your provider.

I have attached a screenshot from a wifi analyzer app on my phone. Mine is HOME-B422 on the lower bands. It looks like there are a few others there as well, but I am not sure what to do now. 

 

Edit: I have looked at the other networks and I have not seen the HOME B443D before. But I am assuming that it is a comcast all in one.

To me it looks like channel 6 is pretty clear i would change the AP to that and see how you get on, it seems that the channel that you are on has a lot of competing signals.

I will try to do that. I can't seem to find the setting right now, but some settings seem to be in strange places. 

 

Edit: found the setting and successfully changed to channel 6. I will update this thread after spending some time testing to see if the issues are resolved. 

 

Edit 2: Short term tests show that video buffering time has went down to next to nothing even in the furthest away room. However the xbone seems to be having issues connecting to the network. 

 

Edit 3: I got the xbox one connected to the network but it appears to be having issues related to last nights attack on Xbox Live and PSN servers.

It works for now. It looks like the interference is different throughout the house. On the right side of the house there is interference from the neighbors on the lower channels. And on the left side there is interference from the other neighbors on the middle and higher channels. Right now everything is OKAY, but hopefully with some testing on other channels I can find one that works well through the whole house.
