About the same at 1080p, 290x is much better at higher resolutions.

If you're gaming at 1080p, get the 970. If you're gaming at higher than 1080p and you don't care about the extra power consumption/heat, get the 290x.

But the 290x runs a lot hotter and needs more power.

It emits more heat. That's not the same thing as running hotter.

At high resolutions you want two of whichever one you end up going with, so the slight difference between the two stops mattering so much anyway.

Get whichever you can get the better price for.

They are close, for me the prospect of game stream and gsync is better, but the 290x is likely cheaper and perform about the same with some edge to the 290x

I will be gaming on a 21:9 Monitor. How much of a difference does that make

Odd I didn't get notified, anyways, Anandtech's benchmarks show the 290x significantly pulling ahead at 4k/1440p in most games, while they're about neck and neck at 1080p.

Perhaps. You wouldn't want a single 290X at 4K though. Whichever you get, you'll want two of them. And even if two 290Xs do perform better, two 970s can max out most games at 4K without AA.

If the pricing is similar, go with the 970. otherwise, the 0-15% gain (depending on the game) you get with the 970 would be negligible if it costs a lot more.

(also keep in mind that a lot of comparisons to the 290/290x are with stock coolers and stock clocks... the stock-cooled hawaii cards are garbage)

@Lays had a 970 and a 290x.

Even he says that they are pretty much the same while the 290x performs a little better.

I have no idea what 290x those people in those benches are using, but it's absolutely dirt slow.

I tested my new 970 g1 at 1600/7800 vs my 290x lightning at 1200/6400 at 1440p,the 290x won by around 3-5 fps in every game I benched, and synthetic benches too.
