5820k no thermal paste

So i just got my mobo back from being RMA and im waiting on a tube of thermal paste to come in as well. Would it be possible to run my computer without the paste for a day or two or is that a bad idea? I have a kraken x61 as my cooler.

Be patient and wait. Not worth the risk of destroying your new 390$ cpu.

It cant really hurt it... but I reckon it will throttle as soon as you load it up. idle and desktop usage / internet browsing will be fine. open a winzip file though and I reckon you will have a bad time

Nope, it will crash within minutes.

I think OP should do it just to see what happens.  My i5's fan dosnt even come on while browsing and it sits at 35 degrees... I really think it will be fine.

The doesn't matter, his cpu will die. You still have a heat-sync on it, which cools it from all of the surface area, the fans just help it be more efficient. It will keep crashing and suffer permanent damage.

I might scrape all the paste off one of my old GPU's and put the heatsink back on, just to test this

actually - I don't even need to... I already know I am right.

 

I have a fake chinese gtx650 - its actually an 8600gt - I had to pull the cooler off to check the GPU as its been BIOS modded to a "gtx650 bra" its so shitful that the cooler doesn't fit. so to make it fit at the right height they have used a small square of metal directly on the GPU with no thermal compound, the cooler has no thermal compound on it either, so its metal-on-metal-on-gpu.

 

sits at about 60 degrees under full load.

If you want a nice 6 core paperweight, go ahead. Never run a GPU or CPU without thermal paste.. It will run pretty close to the same temps at 100C+ without a cooler and no thermal paste. DO NOT DO THIS!
