a new cpu won't do it alone. you'll also need a new board. not familiar with the 750ti but falls in the 260x/270 arena and I think that's about one of the better choices given.......... you can run a 970 but it won't bring much benefit for the expense........ thoughts, don't buy a new card.

this is also a question in my head too

http://www.overclock.net/t/1522956/860k-preliminary-results-vs-8320

according to the test done here

the 860K beats the FX8320 in Single tread and multi tread

the old FX8350 can support up to 280X

the 860K may support any gpu above 280X

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

From the looks of it, you have a very tight budget, and you won't be able to afford a good CPU if you buy the 970. That said, I suggest holding up your purchases because:

  1. Intel -should- be releasing the Broadwell series soon. It might be worth getting it, or it might make the current CPU prices drop a chunk.
  2. Nvidea -might- be releasing a 960. MAYBE. If it happens, it might be cheap and powefull enough so that you can buy it along a CPU.
  3. AMD is getting crushed by the 970s right now, so I expect a new release of GPUs soon.

Ofc, that is assuming you can wait. If you can't, how much are you willing to spend for a new GPU + CPU altogether?

I'd recommend an ASUS H81M-K and a Pentium G3220. They may not me the best, but the 1150 socket in the H81 will allow you to get a decent i5 later on. You'll probably even see a boost in performance with your 750ti. If you have the moeny to get a 970, I'd recommend getting a mobo and CPU upgrade first, then getting the GPU upgrade. I tested a 750ti on my X99 rig and got great preformance with it, so you might upgrade the CPU/mobo and see a preformance jump, too.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

How can you recommend a 2 Core CPU? The board... okay ain´t a bad choice. But going under an i3 is a pure waste of money. Because you might have a better single core performance than AMD´s FX architecture but you need more than just 2 cores nowadays, there are already games coming out that don´t run under 4 threaded CPUs anymore and not to speak the performance in applications under Windows. I´d stick with the GTX750Ti and go for a different CPU and mainboard.

From a setup like this http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ which is even cheaper than a GTX970 the OP would benefit much more and upgrade to a highend GPU later. And BTW he would already have an H97 chipset so if he wanted to go for Intel´s Broadwell, with this board even that would be no problem.

Sice he seems to have the DDR3 already he could even squeeze a R9 280(X) out for this bundle and game in 1080p at high to ultra settings.

Intel i7 7820X (delidded) @ 4.9GHz - MSI X299 M7 ACK + EKWB Fullcover Block - G.Skill Trident Z 32GB @ 3466MHz - nVidia Titan Xp + EKWB Fullcover Block @ 2.1GHz - Samsung 960Pro 2x - WDD Blue 2TB - Seasonic 750W Platinum - modded Corsair 600C - Hardtubed Custom Watercooling

The partpicker link doesn't work.

Buying a dual core is a waste of money from the git-go. bad advice even with the mention of doing a future mupgrade to a quad.

I don't see why a dual core is hated on. I have built a few gaming rigs with Pentiums and they run great. Sure, 4 cores are better, but if you do not have the money, it is a great option. Just like the GTX 750ti. It may not be the best card, but it's a great bang for the buck.
