I'm hoping someone might have some recent experience with this.

A few years ago I tried using a bluetooth headset (like you would use on your cell phone) on my PC for Ventrilo / Teamspeak / game chat via a USB Bluetooth dongle.

I spent weeks trying to get it to work, in the end it functioned but the audio quality from the microphone was HORRIBLE (very staticy / robot like)

I found what I thought was a great deal on a Turtlebeach wireless headset (PX4) to replace my slowly dying Logitech G930, only to find its designed for consoles not PCs and the only wireless method of hooking up the mic is via bluetooth.

I managed to dig up an old usb bluetooth dongle I had around but the drivers don't appear to support bluetooth headsets.

I was considering ordering a new bluetooth dongle (new ones appear to be bluetooth v4.0 I think it was, this one is apparently v1.2 ...) but to see if that would even solve the problem I tried testing it on my laptop (about a year old) the headset works on the laptops built in bluetooth but again the sound quality is HORRIBLE.  Its not the mic, as that sounds fine when connected to my cell phone.

Has anyone managed to get a bluetooth headest to work in windows?  Are the windows drivers / hardware bluetooth dongles just hopeless and will never support acceptable audio quality?  Or is there some piece to this puzzle I'm missing?

I can't understand how something that seems so simple can work on an old phone but fail so horribly in windows.  I see the same issue on Windows 8 64bit and Windows 7 64bit.

I'd greatly appreciate some thoughts / input.

Thanks!

Old bluetooth sucks so bad. Definitely get a new dongle.

Had the same issue with my PX5 and I tried 3 different USB dongles. I just recently got a Wireless+Bluetooth card to test it. But I couldn't get the Bluetooth working without weird system errors.

However the call quality on my phone is great with the PX5 so its not the headset.

There is a cable that you can use that turtle beach sells for headset to pc to allow for chat on the xbox/playstation headsets i had one back when the X4's were the top of the line version. I would not recommend turtlebeach's bluetooth for pc use since they always have issues unless you want to buy that little mixamp thing that turtlebeach sells for like $70 called the amigo or something like that.

I do have that cable that came with it but it does defeat the purpose of having a wireless headset.  I was hoping the general Bluetooth + Headset quality issues may have been fixed with newer versions than the now ancient v1.2 usb dongle I have.

If I just needed to go drop $20/30 on a new usb bluetooth adapter to get it to work well, that would be fine but anymore than that I might as well buy a new headset.

Unfortunately turtlebeach's bluetooth isnt that great. I have a pair of Earforce Delta's which is the high end COD MW3 headset. It came out right when the PX5's came out and i have tried to use the bluetooth functionality on my macbook before and it sucks. I would say since you have a "console" headset to check into the cords for it or else it will be poor quality. I personally plan to sell my beach's when i build my computer because I know it will be bad. If you want good chat i would suggest either look into a good headset designed for pc or even get some X12's which are the low end wired console headset which works great on pc. You can find a good quality headset designed for pc for a fraction of the cost of a turtlebeach headset. I used to swear by beach's but they have gotten to be a premium name for poor quality products these days. I have had beach's since they hit the market with their first series of console headsets back in 2007 and i owned all 3 headsets they offered at the time.

I have had my Logitech G930s for several years now and I love them (though a bit heavy)... actually this is my 2nd set, bought another set on ebay when the orginals started going out (frequent wireless connection drops).

I don't think its that the bluetooth on the headset is bad (you're specifically or mine, or any others for that matter) because they sound crystal clear when paired and used with my cell phone.  Its just when pairing with a PC (or a mac in your case) that the audio goes to garbage.
