which reference 290x

Go to solution Solved by flibberdipper,

Sapphire because... Sapphire.

As some may know i scrapped the new build idea and decided to get a gpu and give the rest of my savings to charity (damn you conscience) So right now I have the choice between a Sapphire 290x or an XFX 290x with reference coolers for the same price ($200) I know they are almost exactly the same but what about things like customer support

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I'd go Sapphire if I had to choose between the two, but please for the love of god get rid of that reference cooler asap if you value your ears

Reference coolers are find so long as you dont mind a bit of sound and wear headphones :P... I have two 290x's ref and they dont bother me at all. As for the suggestions of getting rid of the ref cooler. DONT! I have went down this road and nothing can keep the VRM's cool enough to keep them stable. If you buy a ref, buy it with the fact that you will be ok with the sound.

And runs at 95°C and is pretty loud, yeah. If you're fine with that then by all means get it, but a good aftermarket cooler (like the Tri-X version from sapphire) will make it run 20°C cooler while being quieter.

for twice the cost

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Well keep in mind that you're going to have no room for overclocking at all, and the card is gonna run pretty hot under load.

But for $200, it's a steal, and if you're willing to put up with it then why not

they are designed to run at this temp so its not an issue. I personally set the CCC driver to a target temp of 90 while letting the max fan speed go to 100% (to stop throttling) and it works well and is not loud... my 480gtx's produced more sound and ran almost as warm :P

Oh wow I wasn't aware of the price difference in Canada. Over here the Tri-X version just costs 30-50 bucks more.

Of course they're designed to run at this temperature, but that still doesn't mean that lower temps aren't beneficial or desirable. Comparing them to gtx 480s is also, well, it's a given at the end of the day. Nearly anything looks (and sounds) okay compared to 2 480s after all.

Hmmm the sapphire r9 has a crap cooler, so I suggest you get the other one

Btw, the world needs more ppl like you that give their money towards charity and not towards extreme pcs (although there is nothing wrong with such pcs but if you're a guy who plays 2-6h a week it is maybe overkill). Faith in humanity restored

Longboarders/ skaters message me!
