Not sure if CPU cooler is compatible? help please.

Inb4uall

Helping a friend upgrade his computer. He switched from an old intel board and socket to a Biostar TA 970. Will his old Xion HP-1216B cpu cooler work with that board and socket? I would use PC part picker but The Xion HP-1216B doesn't come up.

A Biostar board paired with an FX processor....Oh god, this won't end well.

If he has all the mounting hardware that the cooler came with, then it will fit.

Yes, that cooler is compatible with AM3 (and therefore AM3+) socket boards.

And why won't it end well? They were paired together here. http://www.maximumpc.com/build_pc_recommended_builds_june_2014

And tbh I wouldn't expect either of those builds to last. Biostar motherboards are mediocre at best.

Biostar boards are crap and unlike Intel CPUs, FX chips actually need a decent board with good VRMs and power phases.

Should I have him return it to newegg for a different board? What should he get instead? Is it even possible to return it at this point?

The Cpu that will be going in whatever build he uses is a AMD FX 6300.

EDIT: I have no idea how I double posted and quoted myself while typing this.

For an FX6300, it will probably be fine....but I'd aim for something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-m5a97ler20

That sounds like a good plan for the situation. Kind of funny because I built a friends rig last Friday... Here's his part list to see why I think it's funny. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Darkman/saved/W3ZzK8

He won't let me overclock it even though it is sipping power on stock clocks.. For some reason his 2D speeds on his GPU are the same as his 3D ones.. Need to lower that still so it doesn't idle at 1188MHz.

If you're looking for people you should join the Social gaming club RSO. There's tons of gamers on campus.

I'm Crop Sciences but almost all of my friends are computer sciences. lol
