Hi,

I've been planning my build for a while now and I've been getting advice from my irl friends, people on here, videos etc blah blah blah. People have been telling me that for my CPU cooler I'm better off using a water cooler which I think I'd agree with if I'm trying to lower temps. But then people are telling me that if I'm trying to lower my overall costs I should go with something like the NH-D14 or a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 because they are still good and are a bit cheaper.

So what should I go with? A fan or liquid? I'm trying to have a very good preforming CPU cooler that is a fair price (like the H100i which I was planning to use when someone told me to use a Dark Rock Pro 3). Budget, probably around 100 USD.

Ideas?

My build:

Air and water are both good options but a cheaper air cooler will achieve the same temps as a highend watercooler so a noctua will get you the same often better temps than let's say a Corsair H100i. But if I must admit that a watercooler looks 100x better than a huge block of copper.

if you can afford it defiantly go for a water cooled cpu but if you want pur silence then go for an air cooler

I think I have a tiny bit of room to be able to get one.

I'd agree, liquid cooling looks way better, but I'm going for performance right now. So if you were to recommend a Noctua, which one is a good one that will perform better than most liquid coolers?

Go with the h100i it is quiet and keeps the cpu chilly

Thanks, but you've said the opposite of what @lani100 just said (above you) as lani said that liquid is louder and lani also said that fan cooling does the same as liquid for much cheaper but not as good looking.

Phanteks ph-tc14pe is better than the nh-d14, and doesn't have ugly fan colours.

Ah yes, the colours do look much better. But I'm not really going based on the looks, mainly performance though looks does take into consideration.

Thank you all!

As I stated, it does preform better than the nh-d14, by about 3 degree's with 2 fans, 4 with 3. All while looking better.

Ah okay, thanks for the numbers!

Whenever I get advice from my friends you all seem to prove them wrong, which I quite like.

Thanks :)

4690K doesn't produce a shitload of heat. A Dark Rock Pro 3 (or noctua equivalent) will be just fine, and will have less of the added noisegenerators like pumps.

You'll be fine on that cooler up to 1.35V, above that is not something you'd want to run at 24/7 anyway.

I've had both the H60 and H105, yes it looks cool but those Hydro series things are garbage.

Thanks for the CPU info, thought it would actually produce a lot. As for the cooler, I think I may stick with the be quiet Dark Rock Pro 3. It's not exactly ugly and I've seen quiet a few good reviews on it! And I've also heard good reviews on the Hydro series... Hmm, thanks for the info.

Go for dark rock pro 3 IMO :D

I think I'm going to agree!

No it doesn't.. Dissipated heat and operating temperature are two seprate things. Even on a 4.5ghz + Overclock, the systemload is only something like 140-150W. So that's something like 110-120W for the CPU.

That's peanuts for the Dark Rock Pro 3 (think it's rated at ~250W TDP). If it overheats, it's due to the TIM and not the DRP 3.

Even if you over clock, the DRP3 is enough. Also consider the performance/sound ratio, as the h100 will be a lot louder underload.

Is this better than the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3?

@Luke, thoughts (as you recommended the Dark Rock Pro 3)?

One big thing to keep in mind is that the Dark Rock Pro 3 is on sale for $59.99 at the moment. Like @Majestic said the 4690K really doesn't produce a whole lot of heat, The DRP3 will cool a 4690K with no problems even with a good overclock but spending that extra money on a AIO liquid cooler for slightly better temps is of course always an option and is your choice but is also wasteful if you are looking to save money on the build like you mentioned.

When considering price/performance the Dark Rock Pro 3 at $59.99 is definitely the best choice.

Awesome, I see why you'd recommend it.

Thanks again @Luke! :)
