Screen flickers, GPU or Monitor problem? XFX R9 280x

I recently got an XFX R9 280x Black DD and I've noticed this since day 1 while using a VGA adapter, I don't know the exact term for calling it but I believe it's flickering(correct me if I'm wrong, I too would want to find out). It happens when I'm viewing videos using VLC/MPC since I only use those 2 mainly for watching videos, also it happens albeit not often but randomly when I'm browsing the internet. After that I thought, maybe it's because I'm using an outdated VGA adapter so I bought an HDMI cable. Though the flickers have minimized, they're still there but subtle and not that often in contrast to when I was using a VGA cable. What could be the problem here? Defective GPU? Defective monitor?(When I was using the integrated graphics, I had no issues with flickering) The strange thing is, whenever I'm playing heavily in Ultra settings in BF4, DOTA2 or any other game, I don't experience these flickers, they seem to happen only when I'm on the desktop browsing or doing nothing.
I also have tried uninstalling/installing drivers, flickers still there. Also, I've tried re-seating the GPU, flickers still there.

Here I was able to shoot a video showing you the "flickering" I was talking about
As I was watching FMA:Brotherhood, at around 0:18 and another at 0:25 seconds you will see what I'm talking about.

Is it overclocked?

I haven't tried overclocking it ever aside from its factory overclock.

I am actually having the same issue with my Devil 270x but when i set it to stock clocks the "flickering" doesn't happen.

So it's possible that we're unlucky and got unstable factory overclocks? If that's the case then well that sucks :/

Maybe but it works fine while playing games.

Same issue, no flickers at all when I'm playing games, they only happen when I'm browsing or doing nothing on the desktop. Wonder if there are more insights from other people on this so we could gather up more info.

Its most probably due to the Frequency of the cable being to high. in CCC you should be able to tick a box to fix it and lower the frequency

Can you please elaborate this? I don't understand what you meant by "Frequency of the cable being too high" please and thank you :D

Higher frequency means more bandwidth needed to transfer the data (Higher resolution etc)

For example I uses a 1440p monitor and AMD CCC with DVI and on AMD CCC it gives me 2 options  Reduce the Frequency on high resolution display to reduce display corruption. And a Alternate DVI Operational mode which does a similar thing

I am sorry but I don't seem to find this option. Also I am already using an HDMI cable and still see the flickers.

Btw as an added symptom, I can seem to play Battlefield 4 with Mantle, it gives me terrible stuttering but when I use DX11 everything's fine.

telling to get a nvidia card is no solution

the 280x is a great card, if xfx does have a online support for customers, try to contact them

or give them a call.

They suggested me to RMA so I did and got new one, now with no more flickers but now with the "snowing effect" of white and black pixels. fml

That sucks. At least they replaced it.. MSI won't refund my dead motherboard, and Antlion won't RMA my defective modmic..

send it back again... Or try to get your money back and get a sapphire.

If they can´t fix this after the second card, I don´t think they´ll ever  be able to.

  • 8 months later...

To anyone who finds this thread through google as I did. (I know this thread is long dead)

My solution to the screen flickering was I had "Enable Virtual Super Resolution" ticked and was causing the issue. Although I was running at native resolution.
