Eh,see it as a way future thing. Besides how is your phone supposed to wake up, and do all these calcultions and still have time to run a motor to rotate it? Maybe if it was awake and all the sensors where on, but that would wreck battery life if it always had to be on.

The idea is cool, but I can't support Apple for this. If you look at the patent filing, they are not patenting a device or mechanism  to prevent fall damage. They are only patenting the idea, the metrics, and the process of preventing fall damage(as in : is is falling? Y/N. If Y then what angle? If angle X then..), so really nothing worthwhile. It looks like Apple is patent trolling... again.

Technically, if the device is not falling(or gravity pulling on it) it will not react in any way, so it would remain motionless.
