Cloning windows 7 from hdd to ssd

HaroldTheGreat

I am going to build a new pc and I was wondering if it would be possible to transfer the operating system (windows 7) from the laptop I am using right now, which has a hard drive, and transfer only the windows 7 operating system to the ssd without transferring anything else because there was something that a family member downloaded and there are ads and such on the home screen. So would this be possible or would it be better just to buy a fresh os?

Do not clone an OS to a new SSD, it is the cause of many problems in the future.

It might be possible to get an activation key from your laptop so that you dont need to buy a new windows copy, but im not sure how to do that.

If you do get the key, all you have to do is put a windows 7 ISO on a USB drive and install windows from there for free.
